“Minions and Monsters”: Illumination Unveils Chaos-Fueled 1920s Hollywood Epic at Super Bowl LX
SANTA CLARA, CA — The yellow troublemakers are back, and this time, they’ve traded their overalls for 1920s tuxedos and film reels. During yesterday's high-stakes Super Bowl LX broadcast, Universal Pictures and Illumination officially announced the seventh instalment in the $5 billion Despicable Me franchise: Minions and Monsters (trailer below).
The 30-second teaser, which featured a breathless Minion running toward the camera shouting “Minions!” and “Monsters!” before an off-screen roar echoed through the stadium, served as a "Big Game" appetizer for the full-length trailer released online immediately after.
Lights, Camera, Chaos
Serving as a sequel to 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, the new film—set for a 1st July 2026 release, transports the tribe to the Golden Age of Hollywood. According to the official synopsis, the story follows the Minions as they attempt to "conquer Hollywood" by becoming movie stars and aspiring filmmakers.
The "Monsters" of the title arrive when the Minions’ ambitions spiral out of control. While trying to make their own monster movie, the crew accidentally dabbles in ancient Eldritch magic, summoning a menagerie of real, ancient creatures.
The trailer features a hilarious array of chaotic encounters, including:
-
The Mummy Mishap: A towering mummy whose bandages are accidentally unraveled by a stray Minion.
-
The Giant Pink Bunny: An enraged, towering fluffy beast that proves to be anything but "cute."
-
"Adorable" Cthulhu: A green, tentacled creature inspired by Lovecraftian mythos that the Minions immediately try to put into costume.
The Meta-Movie Formula
The footage leans heavily into meta-humor, with a standout sequence showing the Minions becoming so immersed in a "Viking" film shoot that they begin attacking the professional actors on set. The energy is set to the pulse of BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That,” signaling a high-octane, modern soundtrack for the period-piece comedy.
Returning to lead the mayhem is Academy Award nominee Pierre Coffin, who once again directs and provides the iconic voices for all of the Minions. The screenplay is penned by Brian Lynch (The Secret Life of Pets), ensuring the film maintains the sharp, slapstick wit that has made the franchise a global phenomenon.
Box Office Dominance
Industry analysts are already predicting that Minions and Monsters will be the next member of the "Billion Dollar Club." Its prime 1st July release date positions it as the definitive family blockbuster of the summer, following the record-breaking success of Despicable Me 4 in 2024.
With the film’s release date recently moved up from 2027, Illumination appears confident that the world is more than ready for another dose of yellow mayhem.
As the trailer concludes with the Minions banding together to save the world from the very monsters they unleashed, one thing is certain: Hollywood will never be the same.
