‘A Pop-Culture Coup’: Hello Kitty Movie Lands Disney and Netflix Animation Heavyweights as Directors
LOS ANGELES — One of the world’s most lucrative merchandise icons is finally tracking a path to the big screen, and she has secured top-tier Hollywood pedigree to lead the voyage.
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and New Line Cinema have officially signed David Derrick Jr. and John Aoshima to co-direct the long-in-development, live-action/animated hybrid Hello Kitty movie. The appointment marks a significant statement of intent from the studio, uniting elite storytelling veterans behind recent Disney and Netflix blockbusters to spearhead the character's historic Hollywood theatrical debut.
The film, which has been granted a prime global release date of 21st July 2028, represents the first time Japan's Sanrio has ever licensed the master film rights for the pop-culture juggernaut since her creation in 1974.
An Elite Creative Partnership
The director selection represents a deliberate blending of distinct animation styles. David Derrick Jr. recently made his feature directorial debut helming Disney’s smash-hit sequel Moana 2, following a glittering career as a key storyboard and story artist on modern Disney masterworks including Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, and the photorealistic The Lion King remake.
Co-director John Aoshima is equally revered within the industry, having recently earned Annie and Visual Effects Society (VES) award nominations for co-directing Netflix’s critically acclaimed sci-fi feature Ultraman: Rising. Aoshima's extensive 25-year portfolio also includes directing duties on culturally resonant television properties like Gravity Falls, DuckTales, and American Dad!.
Both filmmakers have uniquely signed comprehensive overall development deals with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation under the watchful eye of studio president Bill Damaschke.
“Hello Kitty has long been a global symbol of friendship, connection, and fun,” an insider from the Warner Bros. lot commented following the announcement. “By bringing David and John on board, the studio is ensuring that the film won't just be a nostalgia trip for parents—it will be a structurally magnificent, emotionally resonant cinematic adventure that can genuinely bridge four generations of fans.”
A Decade in the Making
The road to securing Hello Kitty, real name Kitty White, a British anthropomorphised schoolgirl residing just outside London, has been an exhausting corporate marathon.
Veteran producer Beau Flynn (Red Notice) reportedly spent nearly a decade negotiating directly with Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji to wrest the adaptation rights from the fiercely protective Tokyo-based corporation.
To ensure the film satisfies both corporate stakeholders and film critics, the studio has also draft-enlisted former Paramount and Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito (The Boss Baby) to co-produce alongside Flynn.

Navigating the Script
While exact plot lines remain locked inside a vault at Warner Bros., the sheer volume of high-profile writing talent that has touched the script speaks to the delicate tonal balance the studio is aiming for.
The current version of the screenplay is being penned by Jeff Chan, utilizing an original story treatment crafted by Night at the Museum masterminds Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. Previous script drafts were contributed by heavy-hitting comedic and genre writers including Dana Fox (Cruella), Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters), and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser).
The Verdict
Generating billions of pounds annually across thousands of lifestyle products, themed cafes, and theme parks, the Hello Kitty brand remains bulletproof.
By avoiding a straight-to-streaming route and positioning the film as a high-budget theatrical tentpole for the summer of 2028, Warner Bros. is looking to replicate the runaway success Universal achieved with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With Derrick Jr. and Aoshima steering the ship, the global box office should prepare for an absolute tidal wave of pastel pink.
