Giant Sequoias Thriving in UK Despite Climate Differences
In a groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL), it has been revealed that giant sequoia trees, imported to the UK over 160 years ago, are not only surviving but thriving in the British climate, despite significant differences from their native California environment.
Adapting to the UK Climate
The study, led by Professor Mat Disney of UCL's geography department, found that the giant sequoias, which face declining numbers in California due to rising temperatures, are adapting well to the wetter climate of the UK. This adaptation has allowed them to grow taller, with less risk of water stress compared to their counterparts in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Carbon Sequestration Potential
Giant sequoias are renowned for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide, with the potential to sequester an average of 85kg of carbon per year over their lifespan of 3,000 years. The study mapped nearly 5,000 individual trees in the UK and discovered that they are thriving, presenting an opportunity for increased carbon sequestration in British forests.
First-of-its-Kind Analysis
Published in the Royal Society Open Science journal, this study represents the first comprehensive analysis of the growth rate and resilience of giant sequoias in the UK. Researchers utilized terrestrial laser scanners to create 3D models of the trees, providing accurate measurements of their heights and volumes without causing harm to the specimens.
Promising Findings for Future Tree Planting
Lead author Ross Holland, also from UCL, expressed optimism about the study's implications for future tree planting and management decisions. The findings suggest that giant sequoias are well-adapted to the UK climate and have the capacity to capture significant amounts of carbon dioxide, contributing to carbon sequestration efforts.
Challenges and Future Prospects
While the tallest UK sequoia measured approximately 180 feet, smaller than their American counterparts, researchers believe that with time and proper care, these trees could potentially reach greater heights. However, they acknowledge the challenges they may face, including susceptibility to lightning strikes and wind damage due to their towering stature.

Despite their endangered status in California, where fewer than 80,000 giant sequoias remain, the UK boasts an estimated half a million redwoods. Their growing numbers are attributed to their aesthetic appeal and environmental benefits, as individuals plant them to offset carbon emissions.
