‘It Never Really Stops’: Director Simon McQuoid Teases Mortal Kombat 3 as Sequel Smashes Box Office
LOS ANGELES — With Mortal Kombat II currently tearing through the global box office and winning over fans with the long-awaited debut of Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, director Simon McQuoid has confirmed that the "Fatality" is far from over.
In a candid interview following the sequel’s blockbuster opening weekend, McQuoid teased that preliminary work on a third instalment is already underway, suggesting that the brutal cinematic universe is expanding into a long-term franchise for Warner Bros. Discovery.
‘The Lore is Infinite’
Speaking to Variety about the future of the series, McQuoid hinted that the narrative threads left dangling at the end of the current film were designed to bridge the gap into a much larger conflict, potentially the actual "Mortal Kombat" tournament itself, which many fans felt was bypassed in the first two outings.
“The beauty of this IP is that it never really stops”, McQuoid told reporters. “There are so many realms, so many timelines, and so many characters we haven’t even scratched the surface of yet. We’ve built a foundation now where we can really start to explore the weirder, more cosmic side of the lore.”
The ‘Shaolin’ Expansion
While Mortal Kombat II focused heavily on the political infighting within Outworld and the introduction of fan-favourites like Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and Jade (Tati Gabrielle), the director suggested that Mortal Kombat 3 might pivot back to Earthrealm’s defenders.
Insiders suggest that the third film is being envisioned as a "war epic," moving away from the one-on-one duel format and into a full-scale invasion plot. There is also heavy speculation that the franchise is finally ready to introduce Shao Kahn as the primary antagonist, moving beyond the shadow of Shang Tsung.
The Mortal Kombat Cinematic Roadmap
| Film | Primary Focus | Status |
| Mortal Kombat (2021) | Cole Young & The Arcana | Completed |
| Mortal Kombat II (2026) | Johnny Cage & Outworld Politics | In Cinemas Now |
| Mortal Kombat 3 | The Outworld Invasion / Shao Kahn | In Development |
| Untitled Spin-off | Scorpion & Sub-Zero Prequel | Rumoured |
A Commercial Knockout
The push for a third film comes as no surprise given the financial performance of the current sequel. In just its second weekend, Mortal Kombat II has already surpassed the total lifetime gross of the 2021 original, benefitting from a traditional theatrical window that the first film, hampered by the pandemic and a day-and-date HBO Max release, was denied.
Fans have particularly praised the increased budget for visual effects, with the "Fatalities" in the second film being described as "stomach-churning" and "technically peerless."
The Verdict
For Warner Bros., Mortal Kombat has become a cornerstone of their "new era" action slate. By retaining McQuoid, who has shown a deep reverence for the source material's "Midway" roots—the studio is banking on consistency.
While a release date for the third chapter has yet to be pencilled in, McQuoid’s "it never stops" mantra suggests that the writing team, led by Jeremy Slater, is already deep into the script. For the fans, the message is clear: Get Over Here, because the fight has only just begun.
