‘Six Clean Kills’: Charlize Theron Reunites with Apex Director for New Universal Thriller
LOS ANGELES — Fresh off the record-breaking success of her latest survival epic, Charlize Theron is wasting no time in securing her next high-octane project. The Academy Award-winning actress has officially signed on to star in and produce Six Clean Kills, a new action thriller for Universal Pictures that will see her reunite with acclaimed director Baltasar Kormákur.
The announcement, confirmed on Thursday 7th May, follows the "bonkers" global performance of the duo's first collaboration, Apex, which debuted at No. 1 on Netflix last month and amassed over 40 million viewers in its first fortnight.
The ‘Apex’ Effect
Industry analysts are calling the move a "no-brainer" for Universal. Apex, which featured Theron as a rock climber hunted in the Australian wilderness, proved that the actress-director pairing is a potent draw for modern audiences.
Six Clean Kills is based on an unpublished novel by Stan Parish, who is also on board to adapt the screenplay. While specific plot details are being guarded with "Marvel-level" secrecy, the title suggests a return to the slick, precision-driven action that defined Theron’s work in Atomic Blonde and The Old Guard.
“Charlize and Baltasar found a rhythm on Apex that usually takes years to develop,” a studio source told Deadline. “They want to push the envelope of physical stunts and practical effects. Six Clean Kills is being designed as a premium, theatrical event.”
A Powerhouse Production
The project is part of Theron’s lucrative first-look deal with Universal through her production banner, Secret Menu. Alongside Theron, the film will be produced by AJ Dix and Beth Kono, with Kormákur producing through his Blueeyes Productions.
The reunion marks a busy period for Theron, who is also currently attached to the Apple Original heist thriller Two for the Money alongside Daniel Craig, directed by Justin Lin.

Universal’s Action Strategy
By securing the rights to Six Clean Kills, Universal is doubling down on its commitment to female-led action. The studio has reportedly beat out several rival bidders for the Parish novel, banking on Theron’s "unmatched" athleticism and Kormákur’s penchant for visceral, grounded filmmaking (seen in his previous hits Everest and Beast).
The film is expected to begin principal photography in late 2026, once Kormákur completes post-production on his current commitments and Theron wraps on Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi epic, The Odyssey.
The Verdict
While Apex was a triumph of the "streaming age," Six Clean Kills appears to be aimed at the "Big Screen" revival. By moving their partnership from the living room to the cinema, Theron and Kormákur are signalling that their brand of action is too big to be contained by a TV screen.
As one industry insider put it: "If Apex was the warm-up, Six Clean Kills is the main event."
