R&B Star Muni Long Reveals Secret Double Lung Transplant After Being Given ‘One Week to Live’

Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter Muni Long has courageously opened up about a harrowing, undercover battle for her life, revealing she was forced to choose between entering hospice care or undergoing an emergency double lung transplant.

The 37-year-old hitmaker, born Priscilla Renea Hamilton shocked fans by revealing the extent of her medical crisis during an emotional appearance on US broadcaster Good Morning America. Long disclosed that doctors gave her a terminal prognosis of just seven days to live following severe respiratory complications linked to her decade-long battle with lupus.

The emergency surgery took place late last year, shortly after the singer abruptly pulled out of her high-profile slot as the opening act on Brandy and Monica's The Boy Is Mine tour in November.

A Crisis on the Road

Long, who was diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune condition lupus in 2014, admitted she should never have embarked on the gruelling tour. Speaking candidly about the pressure to maintain appearances in the music industry, she detailed the physical toll her body was enduring behind the scenes.

"I knew for a really long time that something was wrong," Long said. "Every day I'm spitting in cups and coughing all the time. Trying to take all these medicines to get through the day. With this industry, you're always in people's faces. So, I'm taking pictures, and I'm just huffing and puffing like I just ran a marathon."

The situation reached a breaking point during the tour’s stops in the cold North East of America, chilly environments being a notorious trigger for lupus flare-ups. After contracting pneumonia, Long attempted to push through before her body completely gave way.

"I went back and I think, maybe five or six dates in, it was just like I couldn't even get out of the bed to make my call time for the stage," she recalled. "And the last show, I just barely made it. I was only able to do two songs."

The Ultimatum

After returning home to rest ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Long woke up in a hospital bed to a devastating assessment from a team of specialists. When she pressed doctors on how much time she had left, their response was immediate and uncompromising.

"They go, 'A week. One week.' And my jaw dropped, literally. I was like, 'That's rude,'" Long said, recalling her initial shock. "But they were kind of like, 'This is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice, or you can get these lungs.'"

The singer confessed that she initially hesitated, plagued by the vain but understandable worry of how such invasive surgery might alter her primary instrument.

"The ego and the vanity was just like, 'But what about my voice? What's going to happen?' But I look at my son, and I think about how much more life that I have to live. Quality of life was first. I can't sing if I'm not here."

 

 

The Road to Recovery

Six months on from the life-saving operation, the Hrs & Hrs singer shared an incredibly positive update on her condition, describing her current health as "fabulous."

Long confirmed that her latest scans show she is entirely asymptomatic, with no signs of infection or transplant rejection. However, her return to the stage remains on hold. Alongside the transplant, the artist had to undergo vocal cord surgery and is currently anticipating a crucial vocal check-up this August. Doctors have estimated it could take between six months to a year before she is cleared to sing professionally again.

While her live performances are paused, Long's musical footprint remains active; her latest single, Richest, which was recorded prior to her hospitalisation, was recently released to streaming platforms.

Using her survival story as a cautionary tale, the singer urged her fans and fellow artists to listen to their bodies and prioritise wellness over work. "I was really faced with my mortality," Long reflected, sending a powerful message to anyone pushing past their physical limits.
