Meet Your New Best Friend: Jenna Ortega Shines in First Trailer for Sci-Fi Drama ‘Klara and the Sun’

LOS ANGELES — Sony Pictures has officially unveiled the highly anticipated first trailer for Klara and the Sun, featuring Hollywood starlet Jenna Ortega in a striking, artificial leading role.

The two-minute trailer dropped online on Monday 22nd June, offering a definitive first look at Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi’s cinematic adaptation of the bestselling dystopian novel by Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro.

The feature marks an intriguing, dramatic shift for the 23-year-old Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actress. Stepping away from her signature gothic-horror typecasting, Ortega takes centre stage as Klara, a highly advanced "Artificial Friend" (AF) designed specifically to prevent the pervasive loneliness of a high-tech, emotionally fractured future.

A Kindred Spirit and a Complex Mother

The poignant, beautifully captured trailer introduces Klara as she sits inside a futuristic storefront, waiting to find the perfect home.

Her artificial life takes a dramatic turn when she is purchased by a fraught mother, portrayed by six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams, for her bright but frail teenage daughter, Josie (newcomer Mia Tharia). Suffering from a mysterious, life-threatening chronic illness, Josie immediately senses a kindred spirit in the unwavering robot companion.

As the trailer unfolds, Klara’s innocent wonder, blank-stare smiles, and fierce loyalty begin to systematically heal the grieving family. However, the narrative takes a profound, existential turn as Klara embarks on a quiet, desperate quest to save Josie from her illness, navigating the complex parameters of human love and mortality along the way.

The production boasts an exceptional creative pedigree. Co-written by Waititi and Dahvi Waller (Mad Men), the film is produced by David Heyman (Harry Potter, Paddington) and Garrett Basch, with Ishiguro himself serving as an executive producer. The elite supporting cast features Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi, and Natasha Lyonne.

The Character Roster of Taika Waititi’s ‘Klara and the Sun’

On-Screen Character Portraying Actor / Talent Narrative Role / Core Character Archetype Central Motivation within the Narrative
Klara Jenna Ortega An advanced Artificial Friend (AF) android Driven by innocent wonder to protect Josie and learn human love
The Mother Amy Adams Josie's protective, deeply grieving mother Desperate to shield her family from impending heartbreak and loss
Josie Mia Tharia A bright, chronically ill teenage girl Forms an instant, profound bond of companionship with Klara
Rick Aran Murphy Josie's best friend and next-door neighbor Navigating the elite social divides of a technologically altered world

A Lively Literary Debate Erupts

While the trailer has sent Ortega’s massive global fanbase into a frenzy, it has simultaneously ignited an intense, passionate debate across online literary communities and cinema forums.

A significant faction of Ishiguro purists have expressed immediate concern regarding the tone of the preview. In the original 2021 novel, Klara’s internal monologue is defined by a sense of quiet desperation, profound isolation, and a distinct, haunting melancholy, echoing the tone of Ishiguro’s previous masterpiece Never Let Me Go.

Conversely, Waititi's trailer adopts a noticeably more whimsical, quirky, and slightly sentimental style, drawing immediate comparisons to his Oscar-winning feature Jojo Rabbit.

Social media commentators have pointed out that while Ortega’s performance looks visually arresting, depicting the humanoid robot as a "loveable goofball" to the outside world risks stripping away the deep emotional turmoil of the source material. However, film analysts argue that trailers are intentionally marketed to appeal to broad, mainstream audiences, and that the final film could still pack a devastating, tear-jerking emotional punch.

The Autumn Box Office Slate

The trailer’s arrival brings to an end a lengthy, two-year post-production cycle. Waititi initially wrapped principal photography on the project over 700 days ago, leading to widespread industry speculation regarding how the finished feature would ultimately look.

With Sony Pictures officially setting a theatrical launch date, the film looks poised to make a major splash on the autumn film festival circuit ahead of its wide release.

Klara and the Sun is scheduled to land exclusively in British and American cinemas on Friday 23rd October 2026. Anchored by Ortega’s massive star power and backed by an elite, award-winning creative team, the sci-fi drama looks completely primed to challenge standard genre conventions—proving that a robot's perspective might be exactly what is needed to understand the human heart.
