Australian Farmer Survives Crocodile Attack By Biting Back

Australian Farmer Survives Crocodile Attack By Biting Back

In a thrilling survival story, Australian cattle producer Colin Deveraux confronted a 3.2-meter (10ft) saltwater crocodile during a routine trip near the Finniss River in the Northern Territory.

While stopping by a lake, he noticed fish swimming in its receding waters. Little did he know, his curiosity would thrust him into a life-and-death struggle.  As he moved away, the crocodile clamped onto his right foot, violently shaking him and pulling him into the water. To break free, Colin initially kicked the crocodile in the ribs with his left foot. When that failed, he made a split-second decision to bite back. "I was in an awkward position, but by accident, my teeth caught his eyelid," he told ABC. His daring move paid off as the crocodile released him, enabling a swift escape.

This intense encounter lasted only eight seconds but left Colin with significant injuries, including his foot and leg, which required medical attention. Upon reaching safety, his brother drove him 130 kilometres to the Royal Darwin Hospital, where he is still undergoing treatment, including a skin graft. With the grafts now showing promise, doctors believe he will soon be able to leave the hospital.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Colin expressed gratitude that the crocodile had targeted his foot and leg rather than a more vital area. He also acknowledged the need to make changes in his activities, having spent too long "fixing fences and living life" in the swampy terrain.

The crocodile involved in the incident has been "removed," and Colin's story serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable encounters with these protected creatures in the Northern Territory. Crocodiles are not only a source of scientific and human fascination but also a significant tourist attraction, contributing to the local economy. Though these reptiles can be perilous, Colin's fearless response to the attack serves as a testament to human resilience in the face of nature's challenges.
