Selena Gomez Opens Up About Health Struggles and Her Journey to Motherhood

Selena Gomez Opens Up About Health Struggles and Her Journey to Motherhood

Selena Gomez recently opened up about a deeply personal struggle, revealing she cannot carry her own children due to health complications. In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, the 32-year-old singer and actress explained that her medical conditions would make pregnancy life-threatening for both her and the baby.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she shared. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."

Gomez has been vocal in the past about her battle with lupus, an autoimmune disease that affects her organs and overall health. She underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 as part of her treatment for the disease. Although lupus patients can have successful pregnancies, the risks are high, including potential kidney complications and blood clots.

Beyond lupus, Gomez has also been open about her struggles with mental health, including her diagnosis with bipolar disorder. Her mental health journey has been a significant part of her life, as documented in her Apple TV+ film My Mind and Me.

Despite the setback, Gomez remains optimistic about her future as a mother, exploring other options like surrogacy or adoption.

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,” she said, adding, “I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me."

Gomez also expressed excitement for the future, noting that although her journey to motherhood may look different, it won’t change the connection she would have with her child.

“At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she emphasised.

The Only Murders in the Building star, who is currently in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, also discussed how they’ve navigated their relationship amid her health challenges.

“He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend,” Gomez said.

Although they’re not rushing into any major decisions, she made it clear that starting a family is important to her.

Recently, Gomez has reached new heights in her career, becoming a self-made billionaire thanks to the success of her beauty brand, Rare Beauty. Balancing her health, personal relationships, and professional ventures, Gomez continues to inspire her fans with her resilience and transparency.

As she looks toward the future, Gomez remains grateful for the support systems around her, and the options available to her for becoming a mother. While her journey may be different from what she imagined, her determination to embrace it fully shines through.
