MTV Reschedule VMAs To Avoid Clash With Presidential Debate

MTV Reschedule VMAs To Avoid Clash With Presidential Debate

MTV has rescheduled its 2024 Video Music Awards (VMAs) to avoid clashing with a major political event. Originally scheduled for September 10th, the VMAs will now take place on September 11, the network announced.

This change comes after the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump was confirmed for September 10th, which could have significantly impacted the viewership of both events.

MTV's decision to reschedule the event highlights the network's commitment to civic engagement. MTV has long been involved in encouraging young people to vote, a tradition dating back to the 1992 election. By moving the VMAs, MTV avoids competing with the debate and allows viewers to focus on both important events.

The network is also mindful of the new date, September 11th, which marks the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. MTV has pledged to support related nonprofit organisations, including the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance and Tuesday’s Children, which assists families affected by the attacks.

The VMAs, which will be held at Long Island's UBS Arena, are one of MTV's biggest annual events, and will feature performances from some of the hottest names in music. This year’s lineup includes Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, Glorilla, Rauw Alejandro, and Sabrina Carpenter. For most of these artists, it will be their first time performing at the VMAs, making the show an even bigger draw for viewers.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations with 10 nods, followed by Post Malone with nine. Sabrina Carpenter, one of the performers, is also up for six awards, tying with Ariana Grande and Eminem. Newcomer Chappell Roan is nominated for Best New Artist, a category that will see her competing against acts like Shaboozey and Gracie Abrams.

The VMAs will be broadcast live on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT across 150 countries, ensuring a global audience for the event. Despite the date change, MTV is gearing up for a memorable show that celebrates music while respecting the significance of the day.
