Ian McKellen Recovering After Falling Off Stage
British actor Ian McKellen, 85, is recovering after falling off the stage during a performance in London.
McKellen, who was starring as John Falstaff in "Player Kings," lost his footing during a fight scene at the Noel Coward Theatre on Monday night. He cried out in pain as staff rushed to help him according to the media, and the performance was immediately cancelled.
McKellen was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. The theatre announced on Tuesday that performances would be cancelled for that day and the following day to allow McKellen time to recover.
A statement from the theatre assured that he would make a "speedy and full recovery" and that the actor was "in good spirits."
The production, which adapts Shakespeare's "Henry IV, Parts One and Two," was scheduled to resume on Thursday. The theatre company said, "We are delighted Ian is recovering well, and look forward to him returning to the production as soon as he is ready."
McKellen thanked NHS staff for their care in a post on social media, saying, "My injuries have been diagnosed and treated by a series of experts, specialists and nurses... They have assured me that my recovery will be complete and speedy and I am looking forward to returning to work."
"Player Kings" started its 12-week run in April and is set to conclude in London on Saturday before touring other cities in the UK. Audience member Paul Critchley described the incident as a "shock" to see McKellen fall directly in front of the audience.
Known for his iconic roles as Gandalf in the "Lord of the Rings" series and Magneto in the "X-Men" films, McKellen's stage career has spanned decades, with performances in roles such as Richard III, King Lear, and Macbeth.
Despite the setback, the production team remains hopeful and supportive of McKellen's recovery. They have promised to keep audiences updated regarding the remaining performances. Fans and ticket holders affected by the cancellations have been assured they will be contacted directly.
David Semark is listed as the cover actor for McKellen's role in "Player Kings." The show is directed by Robert Icke and has been a highlight of the West End theatre season.
