HBO Begins Casting Search for New Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Upcoming "Harry Potter" TV Series
HBO has officially kicked off the search for young actors to star as Harry, Ron, and Hermione in its upcoming "Harry Potter" TV series. The casting call, which is open to children aged 9-11 from the UK and Ireland, was confirmed earlier this week. The series is set to begin filming in 2025, with no release date yet announced.
The casting call emphasises inclusivity, stating that actors of all races, ethnicities, and gender identities are encouraged to apply.
The casting notice reads, "We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting." This approach mirrors that of previous productions, like the "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" stage play, which cast Noma Dumezweni as Hermione.
To apply, candidates must submit two self-taped videos. One should feature a short poem or story — though nothing from "Harry Potter" itself — while the other is a brief introduction of the child, including their age, height, and where they live. HBO has stressed that the children should use their own accents in the tapes.
This new adaptation will span seven seasons, with each season focusing on one of J.K. Rowling's seven "Harry Potter" books. Succession's Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod have been tapped as writer and director, respectively, for the highly anticipated show. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has hinted at a possible 2026 release.
The search for new faces to lead this beloved franchise brings memories of when Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were first cast for the original films. Radcliffe was 11, Watson 10, and Grint 12 when they took on the roles that would become iconic.
Fans of the series are eagerly watching as this new casting process unfolds, wondering who will step into the shoes of the Boy Who Lived and his best friends. With production on the horizon, the "Harry Potter" reboot is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated TV adaptations in years.
Warner Bros. Television is producing the series in collaboration with J.K. Rowling's Brontë Film and TV. Rowling herself will serve as an executive producer alongside other familiar names from the film franchise.
While there are no official release dates yet, expectations are high as HBO looks to breathe new life into the magical world of Hogwarts for a new generation of fans.
