Google Doodle Celebrates Flat White's Rise to Global Fame

In an unexpected move, today's Google Doodle is causing a stir by highlighting the flat white, a beloved espresso-based drink that originated in Australia and New Zealand. The animated doodle commemorates March 11, the day in 2011 when the term "flat white" was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The history of the flat white

Believed to have first appeared on menus in Sydney and Auckland during the 1980s, the flat white is an espresso shot topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of microfoam, traditionally served in a ceramic cup. The flat white gained popularity for its lower foam content compared to cappuccinos or lattes, with baristas using it as a canvas for feathered, artistic toppings known as "Latte Art". Over the years, the flat white has evolved with changing coffee cultures. Initially crafted with whole milk, today's Aussies and Kiwis often opt for plant-based alternatives like oat milk.

The Google Doodle captures the essence of this celebrated beverage, stating, "No matter the origins, coffee lovers worldwide agree it’s a favourite morning or arvo (afternoon) pick-me-up!"

While Google Doodle's choice to honour the flat white has sparked confusion among some social media users, many appreciate the delightful animation as a quirky celebration of this iconic coffee. The doodle is visible to users across the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, South America, Asia, and Europe, echoing the flat white's journey from its roots to becoming a global favourite.
