Golden Globes 2025: “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” Dominate Film Categories

Golden Globes 2025: “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” Dominate Film Categories

The 2025 Golden Globe Awards celebrated a mix of heartfelt performances and groundbreaking storytelling on Sunday, with "Emilia Pérez" and "The Brutalist" dominating the evening in film categories. On the TV side, "Shōgun" and "Baby Reindeer" emerged as the big winners.

"Emilia Pérez" takes Best Musical or Comedy and Best Non-English Language Film

"Emilia Pérez", an operatic musical about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, swept four awards, including Best Musical or Comedy and Best Non-English Language Film. The movie's song “El Mal” won Best Original Song, and Zoe Saldaña received the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as an idealistic lawyer. In a powerful acceptance speech, trans actress Karla Sofia Gascón said, “The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul or existence or identity... I am who I am. Not who you want."

"The Brutalist" wins Best Drama

The post-war immigrant epic "The Brutalist" claimed Best Drama, with its director Brady Corbet and lead actor Adrien Brody taking home individual honors. Brody, portraying a Holocaust survivor striving to build a new life in the U.S., delivered an emotional speech connecting his character’s journey to that of his mother, a Hungarian immigrant. “I hope this work stands to lift you up a bit and give you a voice,” he shared.

"Shōgun" and “Baby Reindeer” dominate TV awards

In the TV categories, "Shōgun", a historical saga set in feudal Japan, won four awards, including Best Drama Series. Stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were among its acting honorees. Meanwhile, "Baby Reindeer", based on Richard Gadd’s real-life experiences with a stalker, was named Best Limited Series. Gadd remarked on the show’s dark themes, saying, “I think in a lot of ways, people were kind of crying out for something that... spoke to the kind of painful inconsistencies of being human.”

Demi Moore, Sebastian Stan and Fernanda Torres win acting awards

Other standout performances included Demi Moore, who won Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in "The Substance", marking the first award of her 45-year career. Moore, visibly emotional, reflected on overcoming industry labels that dismissed her as a “popcorn actress.” Similarly, Sebastian Stan and Fernanda Torres earned accolades for their challenging roles in "A Different Man" and "I’m Still Here", respectively.

“Wicked” wins Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award

In the realm of animation and cinematic achievement, "Flow" was named Best Animated Film, while "Wicked" won for its box office impact. Director Jon M. Chu highlighted the film’s optimistic message in his acceptance speech, calling it “a radical act of empowerment and joy.”

The reimagined Golden Globes also celebrated its second year under a new, more diverse voting body, replacing the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the ceremony balanced poignant moments with sharp humor, offering a vibrant showcase of the year’s best in film and television.
