Emmys 2024: Shogun and The Bear Lead a Night of Historic Wins and Surprises

Emmys 2024: Shogun and The Bear Lead a Night of Historic Wins and Surprises

The Emmy Awards this year celebrated a rich array of talent, with diversity and groundbreaking stories taking centre stage.

Shogun Becomes First Show Not In English To Win Outstanding Drama Series

FX’s Shogun emerged as the big winner, making history as the first non-English language show to win Outstanding Drama Series. It also earned acting honours for Japanese stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, as well as a directing award for Frederick E.O. Toye.

This sweeping Japanese historical epic, featuring a predominantly Japanese cast, captivated audiences and broke records with 18 Emmy wins, including 14 at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The Bear Brings Home Awards, Only To Have Hacks Take Home Outstanding Comedy Series

The Bear also shone brightly, with Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking home acting awards in the comedy category.

Liza Colón-Zayas won her first Emmy for supporting actress, delivering an emotional speech that called on Latinas to "keep believing, and vote – vote for your rights."

However, the biggest surprise of the night came when Hacks took home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, beating The Bear despite its frontrunner status.

Baby Reindeer Wins Big

In another notable moment, Richard Gadd's Baby Reindeer claimed Outstanding Limited Series, with Gadd himself winning for acting and writing. His co-star Jessica Gunning also took home an award for her portrayal of Martha, the stalker character at the centre of the show’s controversial and deeply personal narrative.

Gadd, reflecting on his tumultuous journey, spoke about persevering through difficult times and the overwhelming impact his show has had globally, even in unexpected places like Lebanon and Qatar.

Jodie Foster Wins Her First Enny For True Detective

Jodie Foster's star turn in True Detective: Night Country earned her the first Emmy of her career for Best Actress in a Limited Series. Other winners included Billy Crudup for his role in The Morning Show and Jean Smart, who won her third Emmy for her portrayal of a veteran comedian in Hacks.

In a ceremony filled with reunions and nostalgia, stars from iconic shows like The West Wing, Saturday Night Live, and Happy Days graced the stage. It was a night to celebrate not just the stars of today but also the enduring legacy of television’s past.
