Emilia Pérez Leads 2025 Oscar Nominations: Full List of Nominations
The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, with Emilia Pérez leading the pack with 13 nods, making it the most-nominated non-English-language film in history. The film, a musical about a Mexican drug lord who transitions, broke the previous record held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each had 10 nominations.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the film’s lead, also made history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for an acting Oscar. Zoe Saldaña also earned a nod for best supporting actress, though Selena Gomez, who played Pérez’s wife, was left out. Emilia Pérez also scored nominations for best picture, best director for Jacques Audiard, adapted screenplay, international feature, cinematography, editing, original score, makeup and hairstyling, and two nominations for best original song.
The Brutalist and Wicked
Following closely behind were The Brutalist and Wicked, both earning 10 nominations. The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody as a Hungarian architect who moves to the U.S. after World War II, received nods for best picture, best director, and best supporting actress for Felicity Jones. Wicked, the highly anticipated adaptation of the Broadway hit, secured nominations for best actress (Cynthia Erivo) and best supporting actress (Ariana Grande).
The race for best actor
The best actor race features Timothée Chalamet for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and Sebastian Stan for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice. Ralph Fiennes also received a nomination for Conclave, his first in nearly three decades. Meanwhile, Demi Moore landed her first-ever Oscar nomination for The Substance, a body horror film in which she plays an aging actress who transforms into a younger version of herself.
Nominations delayed due to wildfires
This year’s nominations were delayed twice due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, which have left at least 28 dead, destroyed over 14,000 structures, and burned nearly 40,000 acres. The Academy extended the voting period to accommodate the impact, and as a result, the nominee announcement was pushed from January 17 to January 23.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Academy has pledged $1 million to wildfire relief efforts, including $250,000 that would have been used for the annual Oscar nominees luncheon, which has now been canceled. The awards ceremony itself, however, will proceed as planned on March 2, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
The Academy has also confirmed that this year’s ceremony will "reflect on the recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity, and optimism that defines Los Angeles and our industry." In a letter to members, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang stated, "We will honor Los Angeles as the city of dreams, showcasing its beauty and resilience, as well as its role as a beacon for filmmakers and creative visionaries for over a century."
Controversy over AI
Meanwhile, controversy has emerged regarding the use of AI in Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist. Both films utilized voice-cloning technology—The Brutalist to refine the Hungarian accents of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, and Emilia Pérez to enhance Karla Sofía Gascón’s singing voice. Director Brady Corbet defended the decision, stating, “Adrien and Felicity’s performances are completely their own.”
With a historic set of nominations and a ceremony set to acknowledge both cinematic achievements and the resilience of Los Angeles, this year’s Oscars promise to be one of the most memorable in recent history.
