Driver Pleads Not Guilty To Hitting Fans With Car At Liverpool FC Trophy Parade
Paul Doyle, 53, has pleaded not guilty to 31 charges after allegedly driving his car into crowds during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade in May. The incident, which happened on Water Street in Liverpool city centre, left 134 people injured, including eight children. Doyle appeared in court via video from prison, becoming visibly emotional as legal arguments were presented in court.
He faces charges including dangerous driving, affray, and multiple counts of causing or attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. The victims range in age from six months to 77 years old. According to police, Doyle was driving a Ford Galaxy that followed an ambulance into a restricted area before accelerating into fans. CCTV footage reportedly shows the car hitting people before coming to a stop as police intervened.
The defence claims they’ve had difficulty accessing their client in prison, calling the process “incomprehensible” and delayed by “impenetrable red tape.” Doyle’s trial is set to begin on 25th November, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for late October.
