Heist Halted: ‘Ocean’s’ Prequel Loses Director Lee Isaac Chung Amid Creative Clashes

BURBANK, CA — The planned 1960s-set Ocean’s Eleven prequel has hit a significant roadblock. Warner Bros. and LuckyChap Entertainment confirmed today that director Lee Isaac Chung (Minari, Twisters) has officially exited the project, citing the industry’s most frequent culprit: "creative differences."

The departure marks the second major directorial shift for the high-profile heist film, which is set to star Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper. Chung originally stepped in to helm the project last year following the exit of Jay Roach (Bombshell).

An “Amicable” Exit

In a joint statement released Thursday morning, Warner Bros. and Robbie’s production banner, LuckyChap, maintained a diplomatic tone regarding the split.

“Lee Isaac is a singular filmmaking talent whose vision and partnership have been invaluable to Warner Bros. and LuckyChap throughout this journey,” the statement read. “Our experience with him has only deepened our enthusiasm to collaborate on future projects together.”

Despite the polite phrasing, industry insiders suggest that the "creative differences" stemmed from the film’s tonal direction. While the studio is reportedly pushing for a stylish, high-energy caper in the vein of Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 classic, Chung—known for his grounded, character-driven storytelling—reportedly favored a more atmospheric, Hitchcockian approach.

The 1960s European Caper

The prequel, currently titled simply Oceans, is scripted by Carrie Solomon. While plot details are being guarded like a casino vault, the story is confirmed to be a period piece set in 1960s Europe.

Rumors have long persisted that Robbie and Cooper will portray the parents of Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), teaching their young children the "family business" against the backdrop of the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.

A Franchise at a Crossroads

The director’s exit comes at a precarious time for the Ocean’s brand. Warner Bros. is currently balancing two separate tracks for the franchise:

  • The Prequel: This 1960s origin story starring Robbie and Cooper.

  • Ocean’s 14: A direct sequel to the original trilogy, which George Clooney recently confirmed is eyeing a 2026 production start with the original "Eleven" cast returning.

With the looming Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, there is increasing pressure on the studio to deliver "sure-fire hits." While Robbie remains firmly attached to star and produce, the loss of a director just months before a planned summer shoot puts the prequel’s 2027 release date in serious jeopardy.

The Search for a New Lead

The search for a replacement director is already underway. Names being whispered in the halls of Burbank include Emerald Fennell (who recently directed Robbie in Wuthering Heights) and Guy Ritchie, though no formal offers have been made.

For now, the project remains in "active development limbo." Fans of the franchise are hopeful that the studio can find a filmmaker who can successfully pull off the ultimate heist: making a prequel that feels as fresh as the original.
