‘He Spurred Me On’: John Boyega to Lead BBC Documentary Honouring Childhood Friend Damilola Taylor
LONDON — Two decades after a tragedy that redefined his childhood and scarred a community, Star Wars actor John Boyega is set to front a landmark BBC documentary exploring the life and enduring legacy of Damilola Taylor.
The film, commissioned following the recent passing of Damilola’s father, Richard Taylor OBE, marks the first time Boyega will lead a full-scale television investigation into the 2000 killing. Boyega, who was just eight years old at the time, was a close friend of Damilola and, alongside his sister Grace, was among the last people to see the 10-year-old alive before he was fatally attacked in a Peckham stairwell.
A Debt of Inspiration
In preliminary interviews for the project, Boyega, 34, described the documentary as a "necessary tribute" to a friend whose dreams inadvertently fueled his own. The actor revealed that it was a poem written by Damilola—read at his funeral—that gave him the "guts" to pursue a career in Hollywood.
“Damilola had this poem about how far he wanted his dreams to spread,” Boyega told the BBC. “I remember thinking, ‘You’re so young, why are you thinking about that?’ But it gave birth to a mentality in me. I realized I had no excuse. I wanted to be a movie star because someone like Damilola, in my same environment, dreamed to be more.”
Revisiting the North Peckham Estate
The documentary will see Boyega return to the site of the former North Peckham Estate. While much of the area has been redeveloped, the film aims to go "beyond the headlines" of the 2006 manslaughter convictions of Ricky and Danny Preddie.
Instead, the production will focus on the "Peckham Renaissance", the wave of successful doctors, lawyers, and creatives who grew up alongside Damilola and were shaped by the collective determination of the community to "turn tragedy into triumph."

Honoring Richard Taylor’s Mission
A central pillar of the documentary will be the work of the Damilola Taylor Trust. Boyega, a longtime "silent beneficiary" and supporter of the charity, intends to showcase how Richard and Gloria Taylor’s refusal to give in to bitterness changed the lives of thousands of disadvantaged London youths.
“Richard was a man for the people,” Boyega noted. “Now that he’s gone, the responsibility shifts to us. If we don’t keep Damilola’s memory alive now, when will we? He would have been a handsome man with great opportunities. We owe it to him to show the world the life he should have lived.”
The Creative Vision
The documentary is expected to utilize never-before-seen archive footage and personal photos from the Boyega family’s private collection. Producers have hinted at an "empathetic, non-sensationalist" tone that prioritizes the voices of those who actually knew Damilola as a "funny, flamboyant, and charismatic" boy, rather than just a victim in a police report.
The untitled project is slated for a Spring 2027 release on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, coinciding with what would have been Damilola’s 37th birthday.
