Forgiveness is Between Them and God: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Reinvents John Creasy in Netflix’s ‘Man on Fire’
LOS ANGELES — The most dangerous man in the world has a new face. Netflix has officially dropped the first high-octane teaser for its highly anticipated reimagining of Man on Fire, confirming that Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will take the mantle of John Creasy when the seven-episode series debuts globally on 30th April 2026 (trailer below).
Stepping into a role made iconic by Denzel Washington in the 2004 classic, Abdul-Mateen II brings a visceral, modern edge to the character. This new iteration, however, shifts the action from Mexico City to the vibrant yet perilous streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
A Warrior Haunted by the Past
Based on the acclaimed novels by A.J. Quinnell, the series follows Creasy—a former elite Special Forces mercenary—as he grapples with intense PTSD and a past he can’t seem to outrun. Attempting a quiet life as a bodyguard in Rio, Creasy finds a fleeting sense of peace while protecting Poe Rayburn (Billie Boullet), the young daughter of his mentor.
When Poe is kidnapped by a sophisticated criminal syndicate, the teaser shows Creasy shedding his shell-shocked exterior to become the "ultimate badass" once again.
“His history looks impressive, but his best days are far behind him,” an unseen narrator says in the clip. To which Abdul-Mateen’s Creasy responds with chilling precision: “You sure about that?”
A Powerhouse Ensemble
Directed in part by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), the series boasts a supporting cast that signals Netflix’s massive investment in the IP:
-
Bobby Cannavale stars as Paul Rayburn, Creasy’s old comrade and Poe’s father.
-
Alice Braga plays Valeria Melo, a local ally caught in the crossfire.
-
Scoot McNairy and Paul Ben-Victor round out the cast as key figures in the Rio underworld.
Expanding the Quinnell Universe
Unlike the previous film adaptations, this seven-part event is designed as a deep dive into Quinnell’s broader bibliography. Showrunner Kyle Killen (Halo) revealed that the first season draws heavily from both the original 1980 novel and its sequel, The Perfect Kill, allowing for a more complex exploration of Creasy’s redemption arc and his "scorched-earth" brand of justice.
The production was not without its own drama; filming was briefly halted in late 2024 after Abdul-Mateen II suffered a hand injury during a complex stunt sequence in Mexico City. However, the actor who also serves as an executive producer, appears to be in peak form in the trailer’s brutal hand-to-hand combat scenes.
The Countdown to April
With its 30th April launch date, Man on Fire is positioned as Netflix’s premiere spring blockbuster. For a star like Abdul-Mateen II, who is also preparing for his Marvel debut in Wonder Man later this year, the role of John Creasy represents a chance to cement his status as the definitive action hero of the streaming era.
As the tagline warns: “He’s not looking for trouble... but if you take what’s his, he’s the only trouble you’ll ever have.”
