WBO Orders Devin Haney vs Keyshawn Davis Fight

LONDON — The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) has thrown a spanner into Devin Haney’s plans for a summer blockbuster, officially ordering the American to make a mandatory defence of his welterweight world title against the surging Keyshawn Davis.

The WBO Championship Committee, led by Chairman Luis Batista Salas, issued the official directive to Haney’s manager, Bill Haney, and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. The two camps have been granted a strict 20-day negotiation window to finalize terms for the 147-pound clash.

Should the sides fail to strike a deal within the three-week period, the contest will head to a blind purse bid, with the financial split pre-determined at 75 per cent in favour of the champion Haney and 25 per cent for the challenger Davis.

A Roadblock for the Stevenson Super-Fight

The sudden mandate comes at an awkward time for Haney, 33-0 (15 KOs), who had recently been locked in highly publicized social media negotiations for a lucrative catchweight battle against rival Shakur Stevenson at 144 pounds.

However, WBO President Gustavo Olivieri has firmly shut down any hopes of an interim exception. The sanctioning body made it clear that the mandatory obligation takes strict priority. If Haney chooses to bypass Davis in pursuit of the Stevenson fight, he will be stripped of his world title.

Davis Takes the Fast Track

Davis, a 2020 Olympic silver medalist, has enjoyed a meteoric rise despite never having actually fought at the 147-pound welterweight limit. Having previously struggled with the weight cut at lightweight and junior welterweight, Davis made the permanent decision to move up to welterweight following his dominant unanimous decision victory over Nahir Albright in May.

The WBO wasted no time, immediately installing the Norfolk-born fighter into the number-one contender slot, effectively leapfrogging him into his maiden world title opportunity. Davis had previously turned down an IBF title opportunity at 140 pounds against Lindolfo Delgado precisely to position himself for this shot at Haney.

Haney captured the vacant strap last November with a flawless tactical performance against Brian Norman Jr in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This ordered bout with Davis represents the three-weight world champion's first mandatory defense of the 147-pound crown.

With both fighters having previously expressed a mutual willingness to share the ring, fans are anticipating a highly technical chess match between two of America’s elite young talents. However, the clock is now ticking for promoters to prevent the bout from going to the uncertainty of a purse auction.
