The Conqueror Cometh: Warner Bros. Officially Developing ‘Dune-Sized’ Game of Thrones Movie

BURBANK, CA — The Iron Throne is heading to the silver screen. After years of speculation and "thwarted" pitches, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that a Game of Thrones feature film is in active development, marking the first time George R.R. Martin’s sprawling fantasy universe will receive a theatrical adaptation.

The studio has recruited Emmy-nominated writer Beau Willimon—the creative force behind House of Cards and a breakout writer on the critically acclaimed Star Wars series Andor—to pen the screenplay. Industry insiders report that Willimon has already submitted an initial draft to studio executives.

The Conquest of Aegon

While Warner Bros. is keeping specific plot details under a "shroud of Valyrian steel," multiple high-level reports indicate the film will focus on the most pivotal moment in Westerosi history: Aegon’s Conquest.

Set approximately 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones series, the film is expected to chronicle the arrival of Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys. With their three legendary dragons—Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar—the trio successfully united six of the Seven Kingdoms, forging the Iron Throne from the swords of their fallen enemies.

A “Dune-Sized” Ambition

The project is being envisioned as a “mammoth, Dune-sized feature film,” according to a recent Hollywood Reporter profile. The comparison to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic suggests that Warner Bros. is moving away from the "television-plus" aesthetic of the small screen, aiming instead for a high-budget, cinematic spectacle that utilizes the full power of modern IMAX technology.

“Aegon established the world of Westeros as we know it,” one source told IGN. “Every Game of Thrones show has been in his shadow. It’s the one story truly deserving of the big screen.”

The Paramount Merger Factor

The announcement comes at a transformative moment for the studio. Following the finalized $110 billion merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, there were fears that high-budget "legacy" projects might be shelved.

However, Paramount CEO David Ellison has reportedly fast-tracked the project, citing Game of Thrones as his personal favorite HBO series. The film is seen as a "statement of intent" for the newly combined media giant to dominate the global box office.

The Expanding Multiverse of Westeros

The theatrical film will not replace the existing television slate but rather anchor a massive "2026-2027 Roadmap" for the franchise:

  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Season 1 is currently a record-breaking hit, with Season 2 already in production.

  • House of the Dragon: Season 3 is slated for a June 2026 premiere.

  • The Mad King: A live stage play by the Royal Shakespeare Company is set for a summer 2026 world premiere.

  • Nine Voyages: An animated series following Corlys Velaryon remains in development.

While original showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss once famously pitched a trilogy of films to end the series in 2013, HBO ultimately chose to keep the conclusion on television. Thirteen years later, it appears the "movie version" of Westeros has finally found its flame.
