UN Emergency Meeting Called Amid US-UK Strikes in Yemen

In a rapidly unfolding diplomatic crisis, Russia has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, scheduled for Friday morning, in response to joint US and UK strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. This comes after the Security Council approved a resolution on Wednesday demanding that the Houthis cease their "brazen" attacks in the strategically crucial Red Sea.

The Security Council resolution, passed with a majority vote, called for an immediate end to Houthi actions disrupting commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Notably, Russia and China were among the four countries that abstained from the vote.

The joint military strikes by the US and its British ally were a direct response to the Houthi group's continued assaults, which they claim are retaliation for Israel's military campaign in Gaza. The Houthis' attacks on commercial shipping have escalated tensions in the region, prompting warnings from the international community.

The US Central Command chief, General Michael Erik Kurilla, issued a statement emphasizing that the "illegal and dangerous actions" by the Houthis would not be tolerated and that those responsible would be held accountable.

The situation in Yemen has become a focal point of international concern, with major powers taking varying stances on the complex and multifaceted conflict. The involvement of global powers in military actions in the region raises questions about the potential for further escalation and the broader implications for stability in the Middle East.

As the world awaits the outcome of the emergency UN Security Council meeting, observers are closely watching to see how the international community will respond to the latest developments and what steps will be taken to address the escalating tensions in Yemen.
