UK Space Agency offers £15 million in funding for space science experiments

In a groundbreaking initiative, the UK Space Agency, headquartered in Swindon, has announced £15 million in funding for groups interested in conducting science experiments in space. This funding opportunity comes in conjunction with the agency's plans for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS), featuring an all-UK astronaut team.

Dr. Natalya Zavina-James, expressed enthusiasm for the wide array of potential experiments that could be undertaken on the mission. "We think experiments could range from biological science and medical science to engineering, pharmaceutical development, and communications," she said. "We are really excited to see what might come through."

While the mission to the ISS is not yet fully confirmed, Dr. Zavina-James stated that the agency is "fairly confident" in the progress being made with American company Axiom. She emphasized that although the funding is contingent on the mission proceeding, the agency is eager to provide scientists, innovators, and businesses with the opportunity to submit proposals now to maximize the potential benefits of the mission in the future.

Andrew Griffith, Minister for Space at the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology, highlighted the significant role UK businesses can play in space exploration and technology development. "The £15 million funding calls mark a significant stride in our collaborative mission with Axiom Space," he said. "I urge the UK science and technology community to use this opportunity to drive forward discovery and unleash innovation in critical technologies."

The UK Space Agency's collaboration with Axiom Space, supported by the European Space Agency, underscores the nation's commitment to advancing space exploration and fostering technological innovation. This funding initiative represents a unique opportunity for UK researchers and businesses to contribute to cutting-edge scientific endeavors and further establish the UK's position as a key player in the global space sector.

As plans for the mission to the ISS progress, the UK Space Agency remains dedicated to supporting groundbreaking research and exploration efforts that push the boundaries of human knowledge and capabilities in space. Interested parties are encouraged to explore the funding opportunities available and submit proposals for innovative science experiments and technology demonstrations.
