Over 18,000 People Interested in Universal Studios UK Jobs

More than 18,000 people have expressed an interest in jobs at the new Universal Studios theme park in the United Kingdom.

The company has given an update on its website, stating that "strong curiosity and enthusiasm persists." According to Universal, over 80% of the 18,000 people who have registered their interest in working at the theme park live in Bedford or the immediate surrounding areas.

Universal has asked the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government for a Special Development Order (SDO) to build a resort at Kempston Hardwick near Bedford. The public consultation on the plans is ongoing until August 31st. An SDO is needed before construction can begin due to the size of the scheme, which includes upgrading local roads and rail links.

The park is expected to attract 8.5 million visitors on peak days, making it one of Europe's most visited theme parks. Universal has announced that the project will generate nearly £50 billion in economic growth and create 28,000 jobs. A form was added to the Universal UK website in June for individuals interested in "future career opportunities." Around 2,000 suppliers have also expressed an interest in working with the park.

Local Concerns

Some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the site, and those living closest to the area told the BBC that they felt "forgotten." Generation Rentex, an advocacy group, expressed worry that private renters could lose their homes if construction workers moved to the area. The mayor of Ampthill, a nearby town, is concerned that the increased number of visitors could cause traffic problems.

In their most recent online update, Universal said, "The planning process facilitates open discussion and feedback, and we acknowledge Bedford Borough's contribution to the process and continued support for our new development. We're excited about the promising prospects our proposed project presents and remain completely committed to ensuring that our SDO application is thoroughly tested."
