UK Releases Tickets for D-Day 80th Anniversary

UK Releases Tickets for D-Day 80th Anniversary

Tickets have been made available to the public for the main UK events commemorating 80 years since the historic D-Day landings. Scheduled for June 5, the televised commemoration on Southsea Common will pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of those who participated in the Normandy landings in June 1944.

Morning Commemoration Event:

The morning event, set to take place on Southsea Common, promises a solemn yet poignant tribute to the allied forces who embarked on the monumental naval, air, and land assault on occupied France. Tickets for this event were swiftly claimed within an hour of their release, underscoring the public's keen interest in honoring D-Day veterans.

Significance of D-Day:

The D-Day landings, occurring on June 6, 1944, marked the largest invasion by sea in history as tens of thousands of allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy. This pivotal moment in history signified the beginning of the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation, underscoring the bravery and determination of the allied forces.

National Commemoration Plans:

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced a series of major commemorations across the UK and France to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The daytime event on Southsea Common, coinciding with the date when soldiers departed from the south coast of England, will witness thousands of members of the public, D-Day veterans, and VIP guests gathering to pay tribute.

Evening Vigil and Tribute:

In addition to the daytime commemoration, an evening event titled "A Tribute to the Fallen" will honor the memory of fallen allied soldiers who bravely fought and sacrificed their lives during D-Day operations. This community vigil will feature live music performances and a broadcast from Bayeux War Cemetery in France, offering a poignant moment of remembrance and reflection.

Legacy and Commemorative Spirit:

Speaking at the event launch, director Brig. Anna Kimber emphasized the importance of commemorating the service and sacrifice of past generations and passing on their legacy to future generations. The participation of the public, particularly youth, in honoring D-Day veterans ensures that their legacy lives on and their sacrifices are never forgotten.
