UK Ambassador Hosts Burns Celebration in Kyiv

UK Ambassador Hosts Burns Celebration in Kyiv

In a powerful display of solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing aggression, the UK's Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Harris, hosted a celebration of Scotland's National Bard, Robert Burns, at the British Embassy in Kyiv. The event featured poetry and music, showcasing Scottish culture and supporting local artists despite the escalating conflict.

Ambassador Harris, donned in a kilt and a Ukrainian 'vyshyvanka,' led the gathering in celebrating Burns' work and Ukrainian poetry. The event commenced with a poignant minute of silence to honor the 95 Ukrainian writers, poets, and cultural figures who lost their lives since Russia's invasion began.

Speaking at the celebration, Ambassador Harris described the event as a gesture of solidarity with the resilient Ukrainian people, demonstrating that they refuse to be intimidated by Russian aggression. He stated, "Robert Burns has long been admired here, and this celebration is a small gesture to demonstrate that we are steadfast in our resolve and a wonderful opportunity to share Scotland's culture with our Ukrainian friends."

The Burns Supper follows Ambassador Harris's recent announcement with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a visit to Kyiv, where they pledged £2.5 billion of military aid for Ukraine in 2024/25. The UK-Ukraine Agreement on Security Cooperation formalizes various forms of support, including intelligence sharing, cyber security, medical and military training, and defense industrial cooperation.

Of the allocated funds, £200 million will support Ukraine with the largest delivery of drones from any nation. The Prime Minister also revealed an additional £10 million in humanitarian aid, building on the already provided £357 million to support organizations like the UN, the Red Cross, and charities such as the Halo Trust and Mercy Corps.

Foreign Secretary David Cameron commended the efforts of Scots within the UK Government's global network, emphasizing Burns Night as an opportunity to celebrate their vital contributions worldwide. He highlighted the significance of hosting events like Burns Night in war-torn Ukraine, underscoring the UK's unwavering commitment to standing against Vladimir Putin's assault on freedom and democracy.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, Ambassador Harris's Burns Supper stands as a symbol of cultural exchange, defiance, and international support for Ukraine.
