Tracy Brabin Secures Second Term as Mayor of West Yorkshire | Election Results

Labour's Ms Brabin Secures Second Term as Mayor of West Yorkshire

Tracy Brabin, representing the Labour Party, emerged victorious in the West Yorkshire mayoral election, securing over half of the votes cast. The result was declared on Saturday afternoon, with Brabin gaining 275,430 votes, constituting 50.38% of the total. Her closest rival, Conservative Arnold Craven, garnered 15.14%, followed by Andrew Cooper of the Green Party with 12.19%, Bob Buxton of the Yorkshire Party with 8.77%, Jonathan Tilt as an Independent candidate with 8.49%, and Stewart Golton of the Liberal Democrats with 5.03%.

 

Brabin's triumph marked a Labour majority of 192,673 votes, with a turnout of 32.38%. This election saw voters across the region, representing the interests of 2.4 million people, participating in choosing their next Mayor.

 

Ms Brabin, formerly the Labour MP for Batley and Spen, made history in May 2021 as the first-ever elected Mayor of West Yorkshire.

 

The Bradford District Vote Breakdown

In the Bradford district, the mayoral election witnessed a 33.7% turnout. Among the 126,485 verified ballot papers from the 375,488 electorate, Ms Brabin secured 55,878 votes, leading ahead of Independent candidate Jonathan Tilt with 19,889 votes, and Conservative candidate Mr. Craven with 19,206 votes.

 

Responsibilities of the Mayor of West Yorkshire

As the head of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the Mayor collaborates with five partner authorities – Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, and Wakefield councils – focusing on crucial issues such as transport, housing, and the economy. Additionally, the Mayor oversees the functions of the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire and has the authority to appoint a Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.

 

Election Results from Across the UK

In other mayoral elections across the UK, Labour's Sadiq Khan secured re-election as the Mayor of London with over 1,088,000 votes, maintaining a significant majority over Conservative rival Susan Hall. Similarly, Andy Burnham retained his position as the Greater Manchester Mayor, receiving 63.4% of the vote, while Conservative Laura Evans secured 10.39%, followed by Dan Barker of Reform, Hannah Spencer of the Green Party, and Jake Austin of the Liberal Democrats.
