Courtside over Couture: Timothée Chalamet Snubs Met Gala for Knicks Playoff Opener
NEW YORK — For the second year running, the "Prince of Fashion" has left his crown at home. While the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art were swathed in "Costume Art" couture on Monday night, Timothée Chalamet was found three miles downtown, firmly planted in his permanent residence: "Celebrity Row" at Madison Square Garden.
The Dune and Marty Supreme star once again skipped the Met Gala, opting instead to support his beloved New York Knicks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers.
The ‘Rugby’ Red Carpet
While his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, arrived at the Met in a jaw-dropping, nude-illusion Schiaparelli gown, complete with bleached eyebrows and artificial body sculpting Chalamet’s "gala" attire was decidedly more democratic.
The 30-year-old actor was spotted cheering alongside Tracy Morgan, wearing a blue-and-black striped rugby shirt and light-wash jeans. It was a stark contrast to his 2021 turn as Met Gala co-chair, but for the native New Yorker, the stakes at the Garden clearly outweighed the spectacle of Fifth Avenue.
“I’m too locked in,” Chalamet famously told a podcast last year when asked about his playoff absenteeism. “That Knicks run... it’s the most fun period of my life. The Garden is electric.”
A Solo Stroll for Jenner
The actor’s decision to choose the hardwood over the red carpet left Jenner to brave the photographers alone for the second consecutive year. Despite the couple being spotted hand-in-hand just 24 hours earlier at the Broadway production of The Fear of 13, the "first Monday in May" proved to be a scheduling conflict that could not be reconciled.
Jenner, 28, appeared unfazed by her partner’s absence, dominating the "Costume Art" theme in a dress described by hairstylist Iggy Rosales as a "living sculpture." However, the "Met Gala vs. Playoff" debate has reignited social media chatter regarding "boyfriend duties" versus "die-hard fandom."

The ‘Super-Fan’ Blowback
Chalamet isn't the only New York icon to face the "Fashion vs. Form" dilemma. Last year, director Spike Lee faced intense criticism from the Knicks faithful for choosing the Gala over a pivotal game against the Celtics.
This year, however, Lee appeared to learn his lesson. The legendary filmmaker was reportedly in attendance at Madison Square Garden on Monday, though he maintained his "Met spirit" by carrying a basketball-shaped luxury bag—a compromise Chalamet seemingly felt no need to make.
The Verdict
With the Knicks securing a dominant 132-95 victory over the 76ers, Chalamet’s gamble appears to have paid off in the eyes of his fellow fans. While the fashion world may lament the absence of its most bankable leading man, the "King of New York" remains loyal to the orange and blue.
As the Knicks head deeper into the postseason, fans should probably expect to see more of Chalamet in a rugby shirt than a tuxedo. After all, a Met Gala happens every year, but a championship run at the Garden is "forver."
