The Simulation Reloads: Drew Goddard Breaks Silence on ‘The Matrix 5’ Development

BURBANK, CA — After two years of digital silence that led many to believe the franchise had been permanently unplugged, director Drew Goddard has confirmed that the fifth installment of The Matrix is officially still in active development at Warner Bros.

In an exclusive update shared while promoting the theatrical release of Project Hail Mary this week, Goddard—the Oscar-nominated writer of The Martian and director of The Cabin in the Woods—reassured fans that the follow-up to 2021's The Matrix Resurrections is moving forward, albeit from deep within his "writing cave."

“Still in the Works”

The status of the film had been a mystery since its initial 111-billion-dollar-merger-adjacent announcement in 2024. Addressing the long gap in news, Goddard offered a glimpse into his creative process.

“It’s still in the works,” Goddard told reporters. “I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share. It’s a world I care about deeply, and we’re taking the time to get the code right.”

The project marks a historic shift for the franchise, as it will be the first live-action Matrix film not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski. However, the original DNA remains intact: Lana Wachowski is officially attached as an executive producer, a move that Warner Bros. says will ensure the new entry "honors what the Wachowskis spent a quarter-century building."

The Quest for "The One"

The biggest question looming over the production is the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. While The Matrix Resurrections ended with Neo and Trinity effectively regaining control over the simulation, neither star has been officially confirmed for the fifth chapter.

Reeves previously stated in 2021 that he would return "if Lana [Wachowski] invites me again," while Laurence Fishburne recently told The View that his return as the original Morpheus would depend entirely on "who is involved" and "how well the script has been written."

A New Perspective

According to Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President Jesse Ehrman, Goddard’s pitch for the film was what ultimately convinced the studio to return to the simulation despite the divisive box office performance of Resurrections.

“Drew came to us with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world,” Ehrman previously stated. The studio’s goal is reportedly to "advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success"—a tall order for a franchise known for its philosophical density and "bullet time" innovation.

The 2027 Horizon

While no release date has been set, the current production timeline suggests a late 2027 or early 2028 theatrical debut. With the recent Paramount-Warner Bros. merger finalized this week, the fifth Matrix is expected to be a flagship title for the newly combined "Super-Streamer" and global theatrical slate.

For now, the fans must wait as Goddard continues to "compile" the next era of the Matrix. As Morpheus once said, everything begins with choice, and it seems Warner Bros. has chosen to see how deep this new rabbit hole goes.
