The Blind Assassin Returns: Donnie Yen’s ‘Caine’ Spinoff Sets April Production Start
LOS ANGELES — The High Table is expanding its reach once again. Lionsgate has officially greenlit production for the highly anticipated John Wick spinoff centred on Caine, the blind assassin who stole the show in John Wick: Chapter 4.
In a move that marks a historic first for a major Hollywood franchise, martial arts icon Donnie Yen will not only reprise his starring role but will also step behind the camera as the film’s director. According to a report from Deadline confirmed by the studio on Tuesday, principal photography is scheduled to begin next month (April 2026).
An “Ode to Kung Fu”
The untitled project is being described by franchise architect Chad Stahelski as a "modern-day kung-fu classic." While the John Wick series has always leaned into gun-fu and tactical action, the Caine spinoff aims to honor the cinematic language of Hong Kong legends like John Woo and Chow Yun-fat.
“My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made,” Yen said in a statement released Wednesday morning. “What drew me back to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love and responsibility in a world built on consequence. We’re bringing a new emotional depth and a fresh visual language to this universe.”
Picking Up the Pieces from Chapter 4
The film will serve as a direct sequel to the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, following Caine now that he has been "freed" from his obligations to the High Table. However, freedom in the Wick-verse is rarely absolute.
Fans will recall the Chapter 4 post-credits scene, which saw Akira (Rina Sawayama) approaching Caine with a blade to avenge her father’s death. Lionsgate confirmed that Sawayama will indeed return as a co-lead, suggesting their lethal game of cat-and-mouse will be the emotional engine of the new film.

A Global Production
While the John Wick films are known for their European flair, Yen is reportedly pushing to bring the franchise back to his roots. Production is expected to begin in Europe before moving to Hong Kong in late June for key location shoots.
Yen has been vocal about showcasing the "efficiency and professionalism" of the Hong Kong film industry to global audiences. The Hong Kong government has reportedly expressed support for the production, viewing it as a major opportunity for the city’s cinematic profile.
The Expanding Wick-Verse
The Caine spinoff is the latest pillar in a rapidly growing shared universe. With the Ana de Armas-led Ballerina having paved the way in 2025, Lionsgate is currently managing multiple parallel projects:
-
The Caine Spinoff: Directed by Donnie Yen (Production starts April 2026).
-
John Wick: Under the High Table: A new animated prequel series.
-
John Wick: Chapter 5: Currently in early development with Keanu Reeves.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson noted that the decision to center a film on Caine was a "natural next chapter" after internal data showed the character was the breakout favorite of the 2023 film.
As Yen prepares to balance the duties of leading man, director, and stunt choreographer, the stakes for the John Wick franchise have never been higher, or more "stylishly modeled."
