Sunak Hints at Delaying General Election Until Second Half of 2024

Sunak Hints at Delaying General Election Until Second Half of 2024

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has hinted that a general election in the UK may be delayed until the second half of 2024.

Speaking during a visit to Mansfield, Sunak stated, "My working assumption is we'll have a general election in the second half of this year," dispelling recent speculation over a May election.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accused Sunak of "squatting in Downing Street" and called for an earlier vote, claiming both the country and the Labour Party are ready for a change. The latest legal date for the election is 28 January 2025.

Despite Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's announcement of an early spring budget and tax cuts being rolled out, Sunak emphasised his focus on managing the economy and cutting taxes, promising to address issues like illegal migration. The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges of 2023, citing the legacy of Covid, the war in Ukraine, and the conflict in Gaza. However, he expressed confidence in a "better year" ahead, insisting on progress in his priorities.

Despite Sunak's refusal to categorically rule out a May election, he reiterated his intention to proceed later in the year, emphasising his commitment to delivering for the British people.
