South Korean Opposition Leader Stabbing: Hopes Attack Signals End to "Politics of Hate"
South Korea's main opposition party leader, Lee Jae-myung, expressed his hopes on Wednesday that the recent stabbing attack against him could serve as a turning point to end what he described as the "politics of hate" in the country.
Lee, who was discharged from a Seoul hospital after recovering from the attack in the southern city of Busan, addressed reporters and supporters, emphasizing the need to restore proper politics.
"I hope this case, which shocked everyone, can serve as a milestone to end the politics of hate and confrontation and restore proper politics," said Lee, expressing gratitude to the medical staff and vowing to continue serving his country.
The stabbing incident, widely condemned as an "act of terror," prompted strong statements from President Yoon Suk Yeol and politicians across party lines, denouncing it as a challenge to democracy. The police are expected to announce the results of their investigation into the attack later on Wednesday.
The alleged assailant, while leaving a police station, conveyed his apologies to reporters for the fallout resulting from the attack. Meanwhile, three members of the main opposition Democratic Party declared their departure from the party, citing disagreements over Lee's leadership.
Despite their departure, they wished Lee a swift recovery.
The political landscape in South Korea has witnessed growing tension as general elections are approaching in April. While the Democratic Party and President Yoon's conservative People Power Party hold the majority of seats in parliament, several politicians from both sides have hinted at plans to form new parties, signaling potential fractures in the political establishment.
