‘The Weight is Different’: Regina Hall Opens Up About the High Stakes Delaying ‘Girls Trip 2’

LOS ANGELES — It has been nine years since the "Flossy Posse" first took New Orleans by storm, and while fans are hungry for a second round of absinthe and zip-line mishaps, star Regina Hall is urging patience. In a candid new interview, the actress revealed that the long-awaited sequel is being held back by a factor more significant than mere scheduling: the immense pressure to surpass a "cultural lightning strike."

Speaking on the Today Show’s Glass Half Full podcast this week, the 55-year-old actress pushed back against rumours of cast infighting or lack of interest, clarifying that the delay is purely a matter of creative integrity and "studio weight."

The Script is the Final Boss

Despite producer Will Packer recently telling Deadline that a draft has finally been shared with the cast, Hall admitted she is not ready to sign off until the story feels undeniable. For Hall, a sequel that simply "checks the boxes" isn't worth making.

“There’s not going to be a sequel until the script is right, and we haven’t gotten that yet,” Hall stated plainly. “With sequels, you don’t want to do it again if you don’t believe it’s good. It’s got to be heartfelt. It’s got to be something audiences want but don’t expect. You’ve got to have a surprise element.”

Hall noted that the original 2017 film, which grossed over $140 million, benefited from having zero expectations. Now, the stakes have shifted.

“More Fear, More Pressure”

The actress offered a rare look into the business side of a blockbuster sequel, explaining that the bigger the brand becomes, the more difficult it is to protect the art.

The Evolution of the ‘Girls Trip’ Stakes

Factor Girls Trip (2017) Girls Trip 2 (Expected 2027)
Budget $19 Million (Modest) Estimated $50M+ (High)
Expectations "Wait and see" "Must be a cultural event"
Creative Control Director-led Higher "Studio Interference"
Cast Status Rising Stars/Veterans Global A-Listers

“Probably because there’s more fear, more pressure, more interference from the studios,” Hall explained. “They want to make sure they’re... you know what I mean? I think there are a lot more hands. People have a lot more weight on the need for it to do good.”

The "Exotic" Destination Awaits

While the script remains the final hurdle, the destination appears to be set. Writer Tracey Oliver confirmed in late 2025 that the sequel would take the ladies to Accra, Ghana, coinciding with the Afrochella (now AfroFuture) music festival.

Tiffany Haddish recently teased that filming is tentatively eyed for spring 2026, but Hall’s comments suggest that those cameras won't roll until the "Flossy Posse" is 100% satisfied with their character arcs.

The Group Chat is Still Alive

Despite the professional delays, the sisterhood remains intact. Hall confirmed that she, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Haddish remain in a constant, "hilarious" group chat run by Haddish.

“We all want to do it,” Hall reassured fans. “We all love each other. But we owe it to the fans to make sure it’s actually funny. You can’t just go to Ghana and hope the scenery does the work for you.”

With Hall currently promoting the horror-comedy Scary Movie 6 (set for release on 5th June 2026), she is busier than ever. But for the fans of Ryan, Sasha, Lisa, and Dina, the message is clear: The trip is still on, but they aren't leaving the house until the bags are packed perfectly.
