Putin's Forces Advance, Nuclear Weapons Warning

In a worrisome turn of events, concerns are mounting over the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin resorting to the deployment of nuclear weapons as his forces make significant advancements towards the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka.

A recent report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a leading Western think tank, suggests that the ongoing war in Ukraine has eroded Russia's confidence in its conventional forces. This has, in turn, amplified the importance of non-strategic nuclear weapons (NSNWs) in Moscow's strategic considerations, presenting them as a means to both deter and defeat NATO in potential future conflicts.

The IISS report raises a critical question: Could Russia contemplate firing a NSNW, believing that the Western alliance lacks the resolve to deliver a nuclear response? Non-strategic nuclear weapons typically have a range of up to 5,500 km, distinguishing them from their longer-range counterparts designed for striking each other's homelands.

Simultaneously, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S. war think tank, reported that Russian forces have advanced to the south and southwest of Avdiivka, an eastern industrial town currently held by Ukraine. These movements intensify the geopolitical tensions in the region.

Amidst the escalating situation, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk made his first visit to neighboring Ukraine, delivering a message of friendship to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Tusk's visit underscores the growing international concern over the unfolding events and the need for diplomatic efforts to address the crisis.

The global community is closely monitoring the situation, recognizing the gravity of the potential use of nuclear weapons and the implications it could have on regional and global stability. The focus remains on diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate tensions and prevent further military escalation in the region.
