The Oscars are set for a major shake-up, with organisers confirming that the ceremony will move away from its long-time Hollywood base and head to a new venue in downtown Los Angeles from 2029.
After more than two decades at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, the Academy Awards will now be moving to the larger Peacock Theater at the LA Live complex. The change lines up with another big change for the Oscars, as the ceremony will also begin streaming live on YouTube in 2029 as well.
The Dolby Theatre has hosted the Oscars since 2002, becoming closely tied to the image of the Oscars with its location near the Hollywood Walk of Fame and views of the iconic Hollywood sign. The venue was purpose-built for the ceremony and has been a central part of its modern identity.
But the move to the Peacock Theater signals a fresh chapter. The Peacock Theater offers a much bigger capacity of around 7,000 seats and sits in a busy entertainment district alongside major venues like the Crypto.com Arena, which hosts other major events including the Grammys.
The relocation is part of a long-term partnership with AEG, the company behind the LA Live complex. As part of the deal, the venue will undergo upgrades to its stage, sound, lighting and backstage areas.
Todd Goldstein, AEG’s chief revenue officer, said: "L.A. LIVE was built to host the moments that define culture, and there is no greater global stage than the Oscars," and added the company aims to create an experience "that celebrates creativity, honors excellence, and delivers an unforgettable experience for movie fans everywhere".
The Oscars will remain at the Dolby Theatre until 2028, when the ceremony celebrates its 100th anniversary.
