Nigeria, UK Partner on Health Worker Retraining Program
In a significant stride towards bolstering Nigeria's healthcare system, the country has joined hands with the United Kingdom to launch a collaborative venture aimed at enhancing the professional skills of its health workforce.
The formal launch of the health workforce training program, held in Abuja, saw the presence of key stakeholders, including the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mohammad Pate, who underscored the program's pivotal role in repositioning the nation's healthcare landscape and addressing critical gaps in the health workforce.
Speaking at the event, Minister Pate emphasized the program's alignment with efforts to expedite the achievement of universal health coverage, stressing the need for strategic priorities to fortify the health workforce and overall health system.
He outlined key focus areas, including strengthening governance, enhancing human resource information systems, ensuring an adequate supply of health workers, optimizing recruitment and retention strategies, and fostering coordination and partnerships in the realm of human resources for health.
The Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP), under the management of Tropical Health and Education (THET), was highlighted as a crucial mechanism for tackling Nigeria's health workforce challenges. Minister Pate formally endorsed the GHWP, recognizing its potential to complement national efforts to strengthen the health workforce.
In a statement delivered by Mrs. Ebere Anyachukwu on behalf of the British High Commissioner, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in its health sector reform agenda. Key challenges such as shortages in the health workforce, inadequate skill mix, and disparities in workforce distribution were acknowledged, with assurances of British assistance through the UK International Development Programme.
