‘The Fan Ballot Fail’: New Edition Top Rock Hall Vote but Suffer Shock Snub
CLEVELAND — In a move that has ignited a firestorm across social media, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has officially passed over R&B icons New Edition for the Class of 2026, despite the group winning the public fan vote by a staggering margin.
The "Candy Girl" hitmakers dominated the 2026 online ballot, racking up over 1.02 million votes from a dedicated global fanbase. However, when the final list of inductees was unveiled on Tuesday morning, the Boston-bred legends were notably absent from the "Performer" category, raising fresh questions about the actual weight of the public’s voice in the induction process.
The Million-Vote Margin
New Edition’s victory in the fan poll was decisive, with the group finishing nearly 122,000 votes ahead of runner-up Phil Collins. The campaign, bolstered by the group’s critically acclaimed New Edition Way Tour, saw a massive groundswell of support that many believed made them a "dead cert" for induction.
However, the Rock Hall’s unique voting system means that popularity at the "kiosks" does not always translate to a seat at the table.
“The fan vote is a brilliant engagement tool, but it is effectively a drop in the ocean,” noted music historian Arthur Penhaligon. “The top seven fans' choices comprise just one single ballot, which is then tallied alongside more than 1,200 other ballots from industry professionals. If the historians and artists don't agree with the public, the public loses.”
The Class of 2026
While New Edition (alongside fellow heavyweights Mariah Carey and P!nk) missed the cut, the Class of 2026 remains a heavy-hitting and distinctly British affair. Six of the eight inductees in the Performer category hail from the UK, marking a historic year for British music in Cleveland.
Rock Hall Class of 2026 – Performer Category
| Inductee | Fan Vote Position | Total Fan Votes |
| Phil Collins | 2nd | 900,825 |
| Luther Vandross | 5th | 732,747 |
| Sade | 7th | 622,997 |
| Wu-Tang Clan | 8th | 610,083 |
| Billy Idol | 9th | 601,061 |
| Iron Maiden | 12th | 395,281 |
| Oasis | 15th | 259,942 |
| Joy Division / New Order | 16th | 229,862 |
A Pattern of ‘Popularity vs. Prestige’
This is not the first time the fan vote winner has been left out in the cold. In 2020, the Dave Matthews Band won the fan ballot with over a million votes but had to wait until 2024 for formal induction. Similarly, Phish suffered a similar fate in 2025.
The snub is particularly stinging for New Edition fans, who argue that the group's influence on the "boy band" blueprint, from New Kids on the Block to Backstreet Boys, is an essential "rock and roll" contribution that the voting committee continues to undervalue.
Honours Elsewhere
Despite the disappointment for New Edition, the 2026 ceremony will still feature a strong R&B and Hip-Hop presence. Queen Latifah and MC Lyte will receive the "Musical Influence Award," while legendary producer Rick Rubin and songwriter Linda Creed are set to be honoured for "Musical Excellence".
The official induction ceremony will take place on 14th November 2026 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with a live stream confirmed for Disney+.
For the members of New Edition, the wait continues. As one fan noted on X: “They gave us the vote, but they didn’t give us the win. The Hall is still playing games.”
