Nestle issues global recall of some baby formula products over toxin fears

toxin fears

Nestlé has launched a global recall of several baby formula products because they might contain a toxin that causes food poisoning. The recall includes specific batches of SMA infant and follow-on milk, as well as brands like Guigoz, Nidal, Beba, and Alfamino. The company discovered that an ingredient from one of its suppliers might contain cereulide, a toxin that leads to vomiting and stomach cramps.

Although no babies have been reported ill so far, Nestlé is pulling the products as a safety precaution. They have apologised for the worry this has caused and are offering full refunds to customers. It is important to note that any Nestlé products or batches not mentioned in the recall are still perfectly safe to use.

The Food Standards Agency warns that the toxin is very strong, so simply boiling water or preparing the milk as usual will not make it safe. Parents and carers are urged to stop using the affected batches immediately. You can check if your formula is part of the recall by looking at the batch number on the bottom of the tin or on the packaging of ready-to-feed bottles. These codes are listed on the Nestlé website and the official government food safety site.

If you have already fed your baby some of the affected milk and are worried about their health, you should contact your GP or call NHS 111 for advice.
