“The Stath” Goes Meta: Jason Statham to Play Himself in High-Octane Action-Comedy ‘Jason Statham Stole My Bike’

BERLIN — In what is being described as the "role of a lifetime," the indomitable Jason Statham has officially signed on to play his toughest character yet: himself.

The news broke this morning at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin, where a new big-budget action-comedy titled Jason Statham Stole My Bike is being shopped to international buyers. The project reunites the British icon with director David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Bullet Train), who previously collaborated with Statham on the high-speed spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

A $80 Million Meta-Ride

While specific plot details are being kept under heavy guard, the film’s logline confirms Statham will play a fictionalized version of "global action superstar Jason Statham."

Industry insiders suggest the film will follow a self-aware, JCVD-style trajectory, poking fun at Statham’s "unbeatable" persona while delivering the massive set pieces fans expect. The production reportedly carries a hefty $80 million budget, a significant figure for an indie-market pitch, signaling high confidence in the film's global box-office appeal.

The script comes from the sharp mind of Alison Flierl, a former Conan writer and BoJack Horseman scribe, suggesting the film will balance bone-crunching choreography with a biting, satirical edge.

“The Year of Statham”

The announcement arrives as Statham dominates the 2026 release calendar. The actor is currently fresh off the January premiere of the maritime thriller Shelter, which garnered some of his best critical reviews in a decade.

Jason Statham Stole My Bike joins a crowded slate for the star, including:

  • Mutiny: A high-stakes conspiracy thriller set for 21st August  2026.

  • The Beekeeper 2: The highly anticipated sequel to his 2024 breakout hit, currently in production.

  • Viva La Madness: A reunion with director Guy Ritchie that is expected to begin filming later this year.

The Stunt Legend’s Shift

At 58, Statham continues to advocate for the authenticity of action cinema. At the recent London premiere of Shelter, he reiterated his commitment to performing his own stunts while calling for the Academy Awards to finally recognize stunt performers with their own category.

“I’ve spent many years learning different disciplines,” Statham told BBC News in January. “If I have the technical skills to take on these sequences, I like to get stuck in.”

By leaning into a meta-comedy, Statham appears ready to subvert the very "invincible" image he has spent decades building. Filming for Jason Statham Stole My Bike is scheduled to begin in May 2026.
