Japan Traced in Philippine Bomb Hoax

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has initiated a collaborative effort with the Japanese government to probe a series of hoax bomb threats directed at various government agencies in the Philippines.

Following reports of threats received by at least six government bodies and local units, including the Department of Education (DepEd) division office in Bataan and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) head office in Quezon City, swift action was taken to investigate the origin of the threats.

The CICC seeks Japan's help in the bomb hoax probe. These emails, believed to have originated from Japan, have sparked concerns among authorities, prompting a proactive response to address the situation.

Notably, the sender utilized a locally registered domain name, which has also been linked to similar threats against government agencies in Seoul, South Korea. Despite the apparent origin of the emails, the CICC has assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, categorizing the threats as hoaxes.

The CICC emphasized that similar incidents occurred last year, indicating a recurring trend that necessitates heightened vigilance and preparedness measures among government agencies. In response, affected entities have been advised to review and practice their emergency evacuation procedures as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance readiness and emergency protocols.

While investigations into the matter continue, authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of government facilities and personnel, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in combating cybercrime and safeguarding public welfare.
