‘Sega, Give Me a Jingle’: Jack Black Pitches Himself for ‘Portly American’ Role in Live-Action Yakuza
LOS ANGELES — Having already conquered the Mushroom Kingdom and the blocky landscapes of Minecraft, Jack Black has set his sights on a grittier, neon-soaked horizon. In a recent interview while promoting the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the 56-year-old actor revealed he is officially "throwing his hat in the ring" for a role in a live-action adaptation of Sega’s iconic Yakuza (now officially Like a Dragon) franchise.
Speaking with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Black expressed a deep interest in joining the long-running crime drama, which is celebrated for its unique—and often jarring—blend of high-stakes melodrama and absurd, offbeat humor.
“A Portly American” in Kamurocho
Known for his infectious energy and successful track record in video game adaptations, Black was candid about the potential logistical hurdles of an American joining a series deeply rooted in Japanese culture and the Tokyo underworld.
“So I’m going to throw my hat in that ring,” Black said during the press junket. “I don’t know if there [are] any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. Sega, give me a jingle.”
The comment has already ignited a firestorm of fan theories on social media. Fans of the games have pointed to several "Western" characters in the Yakuza lore that could fit Black’s comedic sensibilities, specifically citing Bacchus, the eccentric American trainer from Yakuza 0 known for his catchphrase "Hey, boy!", or even a cameo as a "Poundmate" summon in the newer turn-based entries.
The Video Game Movie “Good Luck Charm”
Sega would be wise to take the call. Black has become something of a box-office talisman for gaming adaptations over the last three years. While his turn as Claptrap in the 2024 Borderlands film was met with mixed results, his other projects have shattered records.
Jack Black’s Video Game Box Office Track Record
| Film | Role | Release Year | Global Box Office |
| The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Bowser | 2023 | $1.36 Billion |
| A Minecraft Movie | Steve | 2025 | $961 Million |
| The Super Mario Galaxy Movie | Bowser | 2026 | Opening April 1 |
| Yakuza / Like a Dragon | TBD | TBD | In Development |
The State of Yakuza Adaptations
Black’s interest arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise. While the 2024 Amazon Prime Video series Like a Dragon: Yakuza received a polarizing reception for its "loose" interpretation of the source material, a new Western-produced feature film has been reportedly in development since 2020.
Critics note that the Yakuza series is notoriously difficult to adapt because it requires a director who can balance "deadly serious" pharmaceutical conspiracies with "fighting a literal bear in a public park." Analysts suggest Black’s history of pivoting between intense character work (Bernie) and slapstick energy (Kung Fu Panda) makes him a rare fit for the franchise's tonal whiplash.
What’s Next?
While no official casting has been confirmed, the ball is firmly in Sega’s court. In the meantime, Black is preparing for a massive week as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters this Wednesday 1st April. The sequel features an expanded cast including Donald Glover as Yoshi and Brie Larson as Rosalina, with Black reprising his role as the lovestruck King of the Koopas.
Whether he ever gets to roam the streets of Kamurocho or Shinjuku remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Jack Black isn't done with the world of gaming just yet.
