Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel, faced significant disruptions on Tuesday evening due to heavy rainfall, resulting in major flooding across the city-state.
Extent of Rainfall
More than 120mm (4.7 inches) of rain fell on Tuesday, equivalent to the typical yearly average in the desert nation, leading to widespread flooding in various parts of Dubai.
Impact on Airport Operations
Flights arriving into Dubai airport were temporarily diverted to other locations, with airport operations suspended for 25 minutes due to the adverse weather conditions. At least 21 outbound and 24 inbound flights were canceled, and three flights were diverted to alternative airports.
Airport Response
Despite the disruption, departure flights continued to operate, while inbound flights were diverted until weather conditions improved. The airport assured passengers that efforts were underway to restore normal operations and minimize inconvenience.
Flydubai Suspension
Flydubai, a major airline based in Dubai, suspended all its departing flights until 10am local time on Wednesday due to the inclement weather.

Passengers were advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates on flight status, highlighting the importance of staying informed about any changes or cancellations.
Weather Forecast
Heavy rainfall was also reported in other parts of the United Arab Emirates, along with southern Iran and southwestern parts of Pakistan. The risk of further flooding remained, particularly in urban areas with insufficient drainage.
Impact Beyond Dubai
The effects of the rainfall extended beyond Dubai, with rain reported in Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, neighboring Oman experienced tragic fatalities, including schoolchildren, due to recent heavy rain.
