“No Brightest Day”: First ‘Lanterns’ Trailer Reveals Gritty, True-Detective Style Mystery for the DCU
BURBANK, CA — The wait for the Emerald Knights is over. Following a brief leak that forced an early debut on 3rd March HBO and DC Studios have officially released the first full-length trailer for Lanterns. The eight-episode series, a cornerstone of James Gunn’s "Gods and Monsters" slate, trades the cosmic bombast of previous adaptations for a grounded, "True Detective" inspired mystery in the American heartland.
The trailer introduces a weary, seasoned Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his skeptical new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Rather than soaring through Sector 2814, the duo is seen investigating a gruesome murder in a small Nebraska town—a case that hints at a "dark reckoning" far more dangerous than a simple homicide.
A “Broken” Dynamic
The footage centers on the friction between the veteran and the rookie. In a standout sequence, Hal Jordan forces John Stewart to "literally fly or die" by jumping out of a moving vehicle, forcing Stewart to tap into his untapped potential.
“Don’t get hung up on the jewelry, junior,” Hal growls in the clip. “You aren’t ready to get up in front of the class until the ring says you are.”
The trailer also confirms a significant departure from previous live-action iterations:
-
The "Shared" Ring: In a twist on comic lore, the trailer suggests the duo may share a single power ring during Stewart's training, with John currently relegated to carrying the Power Battery.
-
Grounded Aesthetics: The costumes appear rugged and tactical rather than the CGI suits of the 2011 film, with Hal’s veteran suit showing signs of age and "brown-light" weathering.
The Return of Guy Gardner
While the focus remains on the central duo, the trailer officially confirms the return of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Fillion, who makes his debut in this June’s Superman film, appears briefly in what looks like a video transmission or a flashback. Fillion has described this version of Gardner as the "last Lantern you want in an emergency," and his abrasive personality seems set to clash with Hal’s "old-school" methodology.
Sinestro and the “Secret” Antagonist
Fans also caught a fleeting glimpse of Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. While he appears in civilian attire rather than his yellow Sinestro Corps uniform, his presence as Hal's former mentor suggests the series will explore the origins of their eventual rivalry.
The "murder mystery" at the heart of the show is rumored to involve The Centre—the eldritch, living entity from the DC: The New Frontier comics—as the trailer features a cryptic reference to a "prehistoric evil" unearthed in the Nebraska soil.
The Road to August
Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max (recently launched in the UK) in August 2026. It will be the third television series in the new DCU, following Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2, and arrives just two months after the theatrical debut of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Showrun by Chris Mundy (Ozark) and co-written by Damon Lindelof and Tom King, the series looks to be the most "prestige" offering from DC Studios yet, focusing on character-driven suspense over traditional superhero spectacle.
