FBI Launches Criminal Investigation into Baltimore Bridge Collapse

What really happened that day in Baltimore

The FBI has initiated a federal criminal investigation into the tragic collapse of a Baltimore bridge last month, following a collision with a cargo ship. The bureau confirmed on Monday that agents had boarded the cargo ship Dali as part of court-authorized law enforcement activities related to the incident.

Limited Public Information

While the FBI spokesperson stated that there is currently no additional public information available regarding the investigation, they also mentioned that the bureau will not be providing further comments at this time.

Deadly Bridge Collapse

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge occurred in the early morning of March 26 when a cargo ship, the Dali, lost power and collided with a support pylon. The incident resulted in the bridge collapsing into the Patapsco River, tragically claiming the lives of six individuals who were working on the span at the time.

Focus of the Investigation

Reports indicate that the investigation will delve into whether the crew of the cargo vessel Dali was aware of any serious issues with its systems before departing the port. Safety investigators have retrieved the ship's "black box" recorder, which contains crucial data on various aspects of the vessel's operations.

Continued Efforts and Challenges

Efforts to clear the wreckage and restore traffic through the port's shipping channel are ongoing. While replacing the bridge is expected to be a lengthy process, authorities have opened temporary channels to facilitate movement for certain vessels. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers aims to open a new channel to the Port of Baltimore by the end of April.

Previous Incidents and Ship Details

The cargo ship Dali had been involved in a prior incident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016. Additionally, an inspection in June 2023 in San Antonio, Chile, revealed deficiencies in the vessel's propulsion and auxiliary machinery. Despite these findings, the ship passed foreign-port inspections in June and September of the same year. The vessel is registered to Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, managed by Synergy Marine Group, and chartered by Maersk.
