Dricus Du Plessis and Israel Adesanya clash Brewing Down Under
Original Showdown and Setbacks
In the world of UFC Middleweight Championship, a rivalry brews between Dricus Du Plessis and Israel Adesanya.
Initially slated for a showdown at UFC 293 in Sydney last September, their feud, infused with historical and racial undertones, promised an intense battle for Adesanya's gold.
However, due to injuries sustained by the South African champion after his July triumph over Robert Whittaker, Sean Strickland stepped in to face Adesanya, ultimately snatching away "The Last Stylebender's" title.
Postponed Dream matchup
With Du Plessis sidelined, the rivalry between him and Adesanya took a backseat. However, Du Plessis didn't let go of the desire to settle the score with Adesanya. After securing the title this past January in Canada, Du Plessis eyed another shot at his nemesis.
Despite calls for a rematch against Strickland, UFC's plans hinted at a Du Plessis vs. Adesanya showdown for UFC 300. However, logistical challenges led to a delay, and Du Plessis advocated for a clash in Africa instead.
Du Plessis Teases Fight in Australia
In a recent social media post, Du Plessis dropped hints about the long-awaited rematch. "Stillknocks" suggested a potential showdown at UFC 305 in Perth on August 18. Referencing Adesanya's past misfortune in Australia, Du Plessis promised another intense battle for the Oceanic native.
Du Plessis made note of Adesanya's unsuccessful night in Australia last September, promising "another beating" there for the Oceanic native.
"Looks like someone wants another beating in Aus..” Du Plessis wrote. "I’m in, I also wouldn’t want to fight the king of Africa on home soil. Manifestations working good for you AGAIN!"
Renowned combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani later reported on the possibility of that coming to fruition, noting that neither man have been officially offered the fight for UFC 305 but both sides are keen for it to happen.
