US To Review Over 55 Million Visas For Rule Breaches

The US government is carrying out a sweeping review of over 55 million valid visas, warning that any indication of ineligibility like overstaying, criminal records, or ties to terrorism could lead to visa revocation and possible deportation. A State Department official confirmed visa holders are now under “continuous vetting,” and those already in the country will be removed if flagged. This includes student visa holders, 6,000 of whom have already had their visas revoked in 2025 alone.
The move is part of a wider crackdown under President Trump’s administration, which has taken a hardline stance on immigration since January. Immigration services are now screening applicants’ social media for “anti-American ideologies,” and anyone found to “despise the country and promote anti-American ideologies” could be denied benefits. According to USCIS, this policy targets those who support foreign terrorists, pose safety threats, or engage in “unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence.”
The crackdown has also affected worker visas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a halt on all truck driver visa issuance, saying foreign drivers are “endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers.” Critics argue some revoked visas, especially among students, relate more to political expression like joining pro-Palestinian protests than to any legitimate security concern.
