The incredible Journey of Francis Ngannou: From Cameroonian Sand Mines to Combat Stardom

Living in Extreme poverty 

Born and raised in Cameroon in dire economic conditions,Francis Ngannou's childhood was marked by hardship and struggle.Growing up in a small village in Cameroon, he experienced firsthand the harsh realities of poverty and deprivation. 

He recalls how he was the laughing stock of the school when he couldn't even afford the basic necessities for school like stationery,a pair of shoes or even a clean uniform.Without a father to support him or his family,burning hunger was an all too familiar feeling for little Francis. 

Cameroon's Sand Mines

At the tender age of 10, Ngannou began working in the sand mines, contributing to his family's meagre income. The work was gruelling, the conditions harsh, but Ngannou persevered, driven by the desire to change his circumstances.

Francis was naturally gifted with extraordinary strength and physicality, and always did twice the work that a child his age could do. Despite his size and strength he is described as been a calm and rather shy child.

Speaking in a promotional video, his mother had said that Francis had always been keen on putting his physical prowess to work, carrying water from the river and helping her with other heavy household chores. She describes her son as “often physical but never brutal”. 

Reflecting on his upbringing, Ngannou recalls the sense of hopelessness that pervaded his community. Children like him were not encouraged to dream or aspire to something greater. But Ngannou dared to dream of a better life.

Dreaming Against All Odds

Ngannou's dream of escaping the cycle of poverty and making a name for himself burned in him.But pursuing his dreams came with its own set of challenges. Ngannou faced scepticism and discouragement from all those around him. 

Friends and family questioned his ambitions, dismissing them as unrealistic fantasies. 

Leaving Home and Finding Hope

At the age of 26, Ngannou made the courageous decision to leave Cameroon in search of a better life. His journey took him across borders, through hardship, and into the unknown.

From Morocco to Paris, Ngannou faced homelessness, hunger, and uncertainty.His life was often at risk, nearly drowning and being shot at in his attempts to illegally cross borders in Morocco and when crossing into France.Yet, amidst the chaos, he found a glimmer of hope – the opportunity to pursue his dreams on his own terms.

In the streets of Paris, where Ngannou remained homeless for a considerable amount of time he discovered a newfound sense of possibility. Despite his homelessness, he felt a sense of exhilaration at the prospect of forging his own path. Paris, with all its challenges, represented a land of opportunity and potential for Francis, as he described on the Joe Rogan Podcast .

The Journey to Combat Sports Stardom

Ngannou's journey from the streets of Paris to the bright lights of the UFC and taking the boxing world by storm is nothing short of remarkable.Ngannou’s physical prowess, his raw talent and undying determination was embraced by the world of combat sports with open arms.

Having started his fighting career in his late twenties by stepping into an MMA gym in Paris, where he offered to work off his fee and train full-time, the mighty Cameroonian has come a long way in a very short time.

From his first fight to his triumphant victories in the octagon, Ngannou quickly rose to UFC stardom, but boxing had always been his first love. From the time he was working in the sand mines as a child labourer he had idolised figures like Mike Tyson, dreaming that someday he could also be like Mike.

Tyson later became one of his coaches in his boxing debut against WBC world champion Tyson Fury.
