Construction Begins on White House UFC Arena

The White House South Lawn is being transformed into a high-octane sporting venue as crews begin constructing a temporary Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) arena. The structure is being built for an upcoming event next month, which will serve a dual purpose: celebrating 250 years of American independence, and marking President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
Heavy construction machinery and cranes were spotted on the grounds on Tuesday. They are assembling what will become a wire-mesh, octagon-shaped cage wrapped in a patriotic red, white, and blue aesthetic. Renderings show the fight ring sitting beneath a massive stars-and-stripes arch flanked by two giant broadcasting screens, with specialized ringside space carved out for a full marching band to provide live musical accompaniment.
The highly anticipated event, officially named UFC Freedom 250, is scheduled for June 14th. Trump has heavily hyped up the ambitious setup, previously boasting that the completed project will boast “a 5,000-seat arena right outside the front door of the White House”.
The spectacle, which is projected to cost the UFC around $60 million, will mark the first time a professional live sporting event has ever been staged on White House property.
Demand to witness the history-making card is already unprecedented. According to UFC President Dana White, roughly 4,300 of the temporary seats on the South Lawn will be strictly reserved for members of the military. To accommodate the massive overflow of fans, an additional 85,000 free tickets will be distributed to the general public, allowing them to watch the live broadcast on massive screens at the nearby Ellipse Park. Organizers have clarified that absolutely no tickets will be put up for general commercial sale.
“I have never seen anybody want anything so much as people want those tickets,” Trump noted when discussing the overwhelming public interest.
While regular tickets are free, the wealthy can opt for ultra-exclusive "high roller" VIP packages. While the promotion has stayed quiet on the exact pricing of the VIP packages, prominent MMA reporter Ariel Helwani has indicated that these elite passes will require ultra-wealthy guests to shell out a staggering $1.5 million. Despite the high price tags for premium access, the UFC's parent company, TKO Group Holdings, insists that it will not turn a profit on the venture. President Mark Shapiro explained that the massive $60 million show is viewed as “an investment for the long term”.
Though the location is historic, the actual fight card has faced a wave of criticism from mixed martial arts fans online, who have dismissed the lineup as underwhelming.
While Trump initially promised in December that the night would feature “eight or nine championship fights – the biggest fights they’ve ever had”, the final schedule has significantly reduced to just two title bouts. The main event will feature a lightweight showdown between Spanish-Georgian champion Ilia Topuria and interim titleholder Justin Gaethje. The second bout features Brazil's Alex Pereira taking on France's Ciryl Gane to decide the interim heavyweight crown.
Official weigh-ins for the fighters are scheduled to take place at the nearby Lincoln Memorial.
