In a recent interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged a notable shift in India's approach towards Canada following revelations about their alleged involvement in a thwarted plot on U.S. soil. Trudeau suggested that there is a newfound understanding in India, emphasizing the importance of collaboration over confrontation.
"I think there is a beginning of an understanding that they can't bluster their way through this and there is an openness to collaborating in a way that perhaps they were less open before," Trudeau stated, hinting at a potential change in diplomatic dynamics between the two nations.
The tensions escalated when, on September 18, Trudeau announced credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June. The revelation strained diplomatic ties between Canada and India, leading to a diplomatic row, with both nations expelling diplomats and trade talks hanging in the balance.
The situation took a more complicated turn when, in November, the U.S. Justice Department charged an individual for orchestrating an unsuccessful plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist on U.S. soil. The indictment alleged that an Indian government official directed the plan, further fueling concerns about India's involvement in cross-border activities.
While the U.S. did not disclose the identity of the targeted individual, Canadian officials pressed India to cooperate in their investigation of the June murder, renewing attention to the movement for a Sikh homeland in northern India. In response, India categorically rejected Canada's claims, escalating the diplomatic dispute.
In contrast, India expressed seriousness in investigating the U.S. indictment, adopting a more measured response compared to its reaction to Canada's allegations. "We don't want to be in a situation of having a fight with India right now over this. We want to be working on that trade deal. We want to be advancing the Indo-Pacific strategy," Trudeau stated.
